Does everyone have to do the preop diet?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to get my Dr to get my paperwork together so we can send it to insurance. As soon as it is approved i will schedule the surgery Asap. I'm s teacher and trying to get it done this summer. So, does everyone have to do the preop diet? I'm just at 35% bmi. .. maybes little lower.

I was lucky & only had to do Clear Liquids the day before. I have read things all over the board .... Some 2 weeks, some longer, some none at all. It's whatever your doctor prefers. I don't think BMI is a factor.

Not everyone but a lot of people. Had you gone to my surgeon you would have had to do it for only one week because of your bmi. I had to do it for two.

The 2 week preop diet is not a bad thing. Click on the related link in my signature about it. It will be worth your time.

My doctor also only requires me to do just a one day preop diet. Im going to try to do at least 3 days though

It really depends on your surgeon. Some have three weeks others only the day before. Ask your surgeon or nutrionist what they require.

I was at bmi 35-36 or something and I did not do the pre op diet. I had to be on clear liquids on op day and I couldn´t have anything to drink 2 hours prior to the surgery. Me and my best friends had a delicious last meal the night before.

My surgeon does not require a pre-op diet. I asked her 3 times just to be sure. LOL

I just have to have clear liquids the day before surgery, then of course nothing after midnight. My surgery is tomorrow morning so today is my liquid day. I'm kind of nervous! In bold letters on my I formation packet it says if you do not have only clear liquids your surgery will be canceled, that really helps me not stray!

I think the pre op diet is for bmi higher than 35 or it´s just different methods for different surgeons, anyone know for sure?

My surgeon doesn't require any of his patients to do a pre-op diet, no matter what their starting BMI is. (He may ask them to lose a percentage of weight pre-op, but he didn't ask me to--and my BMI is in the low 40's.)

That being said, I am already making dietary changes on my own (drinking Protein Shakes for Breakfast, choosing to eat fewer carbs, using about 1200-1500 calories a day, learning not to drink at meals). The way I figure it, the more changes I get used to now, the less of a shock it will be post-op!

Every surgeon has a different pre-op diet. Some have to do it for a few weeks--I just had to do liquids the day before.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
