If you're not the gym type, what to do for exercise?

Recommended Posts

So I've had some bad gym experiences and wasted a lot of money. I just don't like having other people see me huge and sweaty!

I'm trying to figure out what will be the magical exercise for me. I know I will do walking in the neighborhood, but other than that, not sure.

Have you ladies found something you really love, once the weight started to come off? Zumba, dance workout videos, spinning, etc. I need some ideas!! Any other machine you like?

I also have a lot of metal in my left tib/fib area from a really bad break, so I'm not going to be able to do high impact stuff like running and also side to side torque things like serious tennis. Tennis was my thing in high school but the orthopedic surgeon said that the side to side thing was the worst thing for my metal so I could only do slow recreational tennis:(

Anyway, I need some ideas!!!

My wife likes to zumba at a church with some of her friends they stay in the back most of time. You might look at getting an eliptical it works both upper body and lower body. Weights are a really good as well they actually burn more calories than cardio. Another resource that i have used is the biggest loser dvd's, you can tailor the dvd to how long you want to work out, the squats are a killer though. A bicycle is really good as well.

If you like to dance, dancing is a fun way to exercise without thinking you're exercising. Also, you can march in place with some music. Whatever music you like. Its true that weights make you lose more. It will keep you burning calories for 2 days after your workout. You can do leg lifts by sitting in a chair. You can do whatever makes you move and comfortable.

The most effective kind of exercise is the kind you DO. You just have to like what you are doing, and so stick to it regularly....

This is still at the gym, BUT... I took up swimming and I can't tell you how much I LOVE it, bought a waterproof iPod & the time flies, also you don't get all sweaty & no one is looking at you cause you're in the pool... Somehow it just doesn't feel like "exercise" until I walk out to my car & legs feel like Jello lol ;)

I'm not a gym person either. I have a membership but don't use it! I have a collection of work out DVDs I do at home. I got my 4 year old involved so he doesn't let me miss a day! I really like Jillian Michaels work outs but they are really challenging. I would research work out DVDs online and preview them on YouTube uf you're interested in starting that. I also have yoga DVDs which have really helped my flexibility!

Good luck to you and it's important to find something you like!

You could buy a bicycle and take up cycling. Fun way to burn calories without feeling like it's a workout. You can always put a rack or basket on there and use it for a quick grocery run...kill 2 birds with one stone. Back in the day I used to ride my bike to subway for a couple of their chocolate chip Cookies (yum) then ride back....burning off most of the cookie's calories.

I have a ton of metal in my right tib/fib.. I would love to run when I get most of this weight off, but I know that won't happen. Walking hurts sometimes. I hear people talk about how they love to run and how it's a huge stress relief and mood booster. What can do that for me.. Well us?

Where did you purchase a waterproof iPod??

Here's the website: http://www.waterfi.com/

Originally I skimped and bought a cheap waterproof mp3 player but it only lasted like 3 workouts and started going out, but the iPod works awesome, I love it ;) really makes my swim "workout" time fly by!

I have bad knees and was wondering what I could do also. I do a bit of yard work like mowing the yard, and after I'm done my knees ache something terrible. I don't have access to a pool. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
