Tell me about walking and exercise for arthritics

Recommended Posts

I'm being banded in mid-January. I keep reading about people walking to relieve the gas post-op, and to relieve it when it builds up from sipping liquids. :success1: One of the big reasons I'm being banded is that I can hardly walk because of the arthritis in my knees and hips (arthritis isn't caused by excessive weight, it's just exacerbated by it). Has anyone out there had the same limitations?

I am looking into doing Water aerobics three times a week (which I've done many times over the years). Does that help? Would it help to join the health club to have access to the swimming pool between aerobics sessions? Or is the walking something I have to do as it's necessary?

Yesterday we had a fun day at work :phanvan . We went bowling, ice-skating, relays, target practice and had a squash tournament at a sports complex. I got a kick out of everyone else having fun, but couldn't even walk easily from one event to the other. My company in non-participation was a 40 year-old woman who is 8-1/2 months pregnant and a young woman who is even more overweight than I am (I am hoping my courage and success will be an example to her. She's too young to be so limited :welldone2:).

Sivan, once you get doctors clearance it sound like the aqua aerobics are right up your alley. Don't be discouraged that you can't walk. I would stick to the Water. You will still lose weight without jarring your muscles. Good luck to you.

Sivan, I am going through just exactly what you are going through. It is so bad that that getting around my house is a challenge! Infact I wasn't

anywhere near my weight of 290lbs when my knees started to act up, but by the time they where bothering me enough to see an Orthopedic Surg. !st. I was to young for knee replacement. & the 2nd. time far too heavy. Now I'm ready for a wheel chair! Needless to say I had to give up my job. & the majority of what at one time was a very active life. Now I don't get out much at all. My majore goal with the band is take enough lbs. off to please avery picking & unplesant Dr. ( who I get the impression has very little use for FAT people!) Anyway his his suggestion to me was get into the pool ATLEAST 3 TIMES / WK. And so far so good, I'm down about 15lbs. & do feal better.

Sure hope this helps alittle. oh & and hand weigts are good for upper body, those U can do sitting.

Sivan,

I do exercises in the pool for burning calories but not hurting joints. You need a pro to show you some. Maybe a book from the library?

Good luck.

edieparks, I just got banded dec 11. yes, there are gas bubbles to deal with even when you work hard not to sip up air. Walking is a really good way to move the bubbles. But also just moving side to side, and gentle twisting motion. The walking just helps build you back up and your strength after surgery. I really started walking and doing more b/4 the surgery and I think it has paid off. You dont' have to miles, just short distance several times a day. Always start small and move up. Every step is an accomplishment. And, ALWAYS remind yourself that this is the first day that we love ourselves enough finally to do something for ourselves and not always for others. w8t4m4

Thanks all for the good answers. It looks like Water exercise will pay off, and I should start now, about 3-1/2 weeks from surgery. I have a choice of two good places for Water aerobics with professional instructors.

Walking will have to come when I get some of the wieght off and build my strength and flexibility. Hand weights are out because the arthritis is also in my shoulders. I'm willing to start as soon as I can. I live where we have hills everywhere, but I may be able to walk at my lunch break. And they're not so strict at work that I can't get up now and them to strecth and twist.

I'm really looking forward to this.

very picking & unplesant Dr. (who I get the impression has very little use for FAT people!) :angry

Kattiegirl - If I were you I'd get a different Doctor. You don't need one who is not supportive, compassionate and positive. We get enough of that in our lives without our doctors joining in.

Get positive support and hang in there. That's what we're here for.

Sivan. thanks for the moral support, it really means alot., but as for changing Drs.. where I live U R just lucky to even get into see one. I've put feellers out in other near by cities , but nothing. Orthopedic Surg. must be the most in demand Drs. out there.

But knowing that U people are out to help me through the bad days (and there are alot of those!) SURE MEANS ALOT! I will start posting from now on .

Hi Sivan,

I completely understand where you are coming from. I lost my leg just above the knee 4 years ago and have since gained 80+ pounds due to mobility restriction. I am being banded on January 2 and hopefully that will help me shed some of the weight I've gained since my amputation.

I think any movement will help with the dissolution of gas pains. Also, I think swimming (once stitches are healed) and Pilates may help you gain strength but not impact your joints too much (those are my plans for exercise).

Another thing I use sometimes is an exercise DVD entitle "Waking Away the Pounds". A quick search on Amazon can provide you with lots of variations of in-home walking/movement DVDs.

Good luck!

Hi all! My date is confirmed. January 10. And it works out perfectly with work because my boss and half the office are going to be in Viet Nam and Columbia on business. Things are falling into place too easily for this to be any of my doing...

Last night I chose a health club and joined. Yes, I will use it. Money is a great motivator. Water Aerobics twice a week and Pilates once a week.

I completely sympathize with you, asI am in the same boat! I also have severe arthrits of the knees and ankles and even a little walking is extremely painful. I hope that as the weight comes off, I will be able to do more, but for now I am going back to Water aerobics, which I started a couple months before my surgery(Nov. 30). I am not sure if my incisions are healed enough yet, but I am anxious to get back. Also, Richard Simmons has an exercise video out that is done all from a chair, but is areally good aerobic workout. I ordered it from his website, and it is excellent for people who have limited mobility, or are in wheelchairs. Hang in there--it has not been as bad for me as I thought it would be. This feeling of getting full on such little food is incredible. I am still on the mushies stage, but doing really well. I have lost 14 lbs since surgery, and 24 overall, and am very encouraged, so keep the faith and everything will be fine!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
