I just worry that when I get to the point that my stomach can hold more I will start eating too much again.

You will start eating more with time.

I wish treatment teams would prepare their patients for this to happen. Take a look at 1:40 min when he talks about portion sizes.

I'm determined to never let that happen though!

How are you going to prevent this?

I’ve noticed a definite increase in appetite since around month 5, requiring much greater diligence and am sure this becomes even more challenging over time.😖Thanks for posting Dr. Weiner reminders and suggestions!

I noticed an increase in portion size up to maybe 1 years or 1.5 years. After that it stayed the same.

Hunger is more or less the same. I don't feel much physical hunger. Appetite varies big time with stress levels, working load and mood in general.

I think you’ve hit it there...stress, work, mood. The change around month 5 feels more about insides being less swollen, better healed, less nausea, ability to tolerate more foods, life “feels more back to normal”. The real work begins.

I'd rather think of it as "finding your new sustainable routine".

Referring to all of this as "hard work" or "the real work" or "a daily struggle" or "constant battle" as so many patients seem to do sets up an atmosphere that makes me feel uncomfortable to emerge myself into.

Words are very powerful. Be careful not to create an uncomfortable environment in your own head.

I've prepared mentally for this for a long time. I'm very determined to be healthy and I feel like the habits I'm forming will set me up for future success. I'm definitely measuring and tracking my food and not eating more than I should.
I can only take it one day at a time and do the best I can each day.
I came to this forum to get advice and see what successful people have done to stay on track.
I feel prepared, just nervous too because I'm a worrier.

I’m glad I read this because I wasn’t told the hunger glands came back! I was set back 2 weeks because I’m deathly allergic to cats & my eyes & throat almost completely swelled shut so I didn’t exercise for 1st 2 1/2 weeks. I only lost 19 lbs including pre op shakes but I started walking and swimming yesterday. I hope I make it past honeymoon stage because my surgeon said I should have lost minimum 35 pounds in 4 1/2 weeks. I’m still having trouble with Water & shakes bc until the abandoned cat hiding in house was removed, I was pretty out of it. So I’m really just starting. So the lack of hunger only lasts 2 months? Ugh . I’m just glad I finally had the sleeve surgery so I have it in my head to really start serious again. It’s weird I didn’t lose laying in bed not taking much in because swollen throat. Second that Persian cat was removed to neighbors I was better fast. Thanks for everyone’s questions and advice on here.

Hunger comes back at different times for everyone. Most of the time it seems like it's way longer than 2 months.
It's manageable. I haven't had a terrible time with head hunger, but I do have actual physical hunger that lets me know when it's time to eat.
I had hoped I wouldn't feel hungry at all, but oh well. I'm doing fine and managing it, and it's not horrible. I have to learn to eat like a normal person anyway, whether I'm hungry or not.

I just realized you might have been asking how I was going to prevent being able to eat more in the future from happening.
The answer to that is I can't.
I was referring to preventing myself from overeating in the future. I am determined not to let myself slip back into old habits.

My question was more like how are you planning to handle the fact that you're going to be able to eat more. All patients are determined to "never let it happen again" and many of them fail.

Too many patients say "I will never again" - until the day they finally do.

OK then I did understand. I don't believe I'll "never do that again", but I've worked hard for a long time on my relationship with food and I hope that will help me when the time comes. I have spent a long time changing my diet long before surgery. I don't eat things like processed or fast food. I eat mostly vegetarian. I prefer healthy food. I'm not saying I never want junk, but I just don't keep it in the house. I know I will have treats now and then in the future, but they won't be a major part of my diet.
I didn't get as fat as I was by not eating a bunch of crap, but I did work on that for years before surgery so I hope that will help me.
This is a lifestyle change and it's important to me to change my life and live healthy.
I'm just going to keep working on all my habits, working on my mental health, and use this tool to the best of my ability.

I must be an aberration because while my portion size has increased from where it was 17 years ago past the 2 month mark, not by much.

The video doc above claims that folks will be back up to a plate of food at 5 years, but I have found that is not the case with me. I take his point that pre-op, we were able to eat 2 plates. I could probably have done more, what with being a binge eater.

I can't eat a normal plate of food, even now. If it's a 5" plate, I won't leave as much, but there is still usually left over food.

I don't think this is necessarily attributable to anything I did, at least purposely. I also don't have much of an appetite either. I can't see how anything I did could have had an impact all these years later. I'm just wierd.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
