You Definately Don't Get Into Shape In Only Two Weeks On The liquid diet. But Not To Many Of Us Got Their Surgery Date Immediately. At Least I Know I Didn't And I See That Is The Case Most Times Than Not. Within The Month Or Two You Are Waiting For Your Surgery To Fully Commit To A New Way Of Eating And Moving. I Know That I Was Able To Make Short Term Commitments So I Knew That I Could Do It Until Surgery And My Blood Pressure Went From High To Normal And I Felt Alot Better. My Issue Was Always Long Term. Hopefully This Is The Answer. People With A Bmi As You Say Of Only 35, I Question The Surgeons Motive For Doing The Surgery.

Susannah

I Wish You The Best. I Agree There Shouldn't Be 2 Classes Of Obese. All Of Us Who Have Had The Surgery Or Who Qualify For It Have The Same Struggles Or We Wouldn't Be In The Situation We're In. Commit To Health Immediately And Everything Will Go Fine. Good Luck Again

I was not required to do anything in particular leading up to my surgery. I too tried to avoid the "last meal" syndrome and my main goal was to not gain any weight from 1st appointment to actual surgery (approx. 6 months). On the other hand, my post-op regime included a VERY strict 30 days of liquids only.

Cheers,

Marie

I was on a diet for two weeks prior to surgery. I was to have two Protein Shakes a day and a dinner consisting of a Protein and a vegitable ONLY. It was hell but I have to be honest it mentally prepares you better for after the surgery. It was hard to do but I think it would have been more dramatic to eat normally, have the surgery and then be reduced to liquids. Once I got to mushies I was psyched! I didn't need to go through all that sugar withdrawal & stuff and deal with the loss of food issue after surgery. I already had it covered and knew what to expect.

Heck all...I'm not feeling that I'm 'better' than anyone cause I don't have to do liquids. I'm just counting my blessings! I know how hard of a struggle it is for all of you who have to do it! I do plan on doing my Protein Shakes for 1 meal a day, moving onto two meals a day before the surgery. Definately getting off all sugars. I suppose I will have one final glass of bubbly this New Years!!

Well I thought that was exactly what I said Laurigee - I'm not knocking the Optifast, I was just mildly disagreeing that it makes all the difference to recovery. But I only know my own experience, not anyone elses.

But I dont see where anyone has mentioned there being 2 classes of obese except for YOU when you say you'd question the motives of anyone of BMI 35 having this surgery. Tsk tsk. I wouldnt say that too loud if I were you. I certainly dont think I'm "better" because I didnt have to do it.

I wasn't the one who first brought up two classes of obesity it was sussanah and I just agreed. I don't know why you are being so defensive. I think we must be misunderstanding each other. My point was just that you don't have to wait for your band to be in to start a healthier lifestyle.

I think I am able to safely say that there is a reason why most doctors in the US don't do the surgery for BMI's of less than 40. I don't have a problem with that since I was only a 41 prior to surgery. Personally I think every surgery thats done on anyone needs to be necessary. Of coarse every doctor and insurance company needs a cut off point and I think the cut off is very fair. Again, that is just MY opinion. I may have not came across as clearly as I should have and I apologize for anyone who was offended, which you seem to be. SO TSK, TSK ON ME.

Savannah unfortuantnly many people consider 2 or 3 classes of obestiy and that it's okay to put down or otherwise belittle people going in to surgery with bmi's between 30 and 39 :huggie: Just ignore those people! It's their insecurites that make them put down others whether they mean to or not. I copped it after I was banded from people with much higher bmi's than mine (why did you bother with the surgery your not even that big? I wish I was as fat as you blah blah - it's hurtful), i've seen heaps of other people cop it too. We are all in need of and deserving of having this surgery. We were all obese. Everybody deserves a chance to be healthy.

You are not less of a person regardless your starting weight or pre-op diet. I did the liquid Optifast and my recovery was gawd awful - other people do it and say their recovery is a breeze so who knows? I did lose a lot of weight on the pre-op and that is hugh psycholical thing. I'm sure if you ask your doc his reasoning for the diet (and it didn't used to be compulsory with him) he will tell you about the open lap band surgeries he had to do from huge livers - that's why they enforce the liquid diet so that that doesn't have to happen. It's easier to just give it to everybody than have us all pay $350 out of pocket in melbourne for scans to see how big our liver is pre-op. When I had the scan post-op from a liver problem I was having (caused by meds nothing serious thankfully!) I fully understood the crazy cost out of pocket that medicare didn't cover was a huge reason for just putting everybody on the same diet.

There are psychological reasons for the Optifast or kickstart also... the benefits from those are huge - once you start losing chunks of weight you become really motivated and up beat - the optifast doesn't make you wait 3 months after surgery for a good fill before you start losing weight - it's insant success which does help you feel really good (to know you've already lost all that weight) while your waiting for a good fill. Your doc is doing the right thing for you don't worry about what anybody elses doc is having them do.... we're all paying our docs the big $$ for their expertise - trust your own doc :) With most of the little differences betweens surgeons practices there are no definitive right or wrongs just different ways of approaching things.

I only didnt have to do it because by pure chance I'd had a liver scan about 2 weeks before I saw my surgeon. When I went to my GP to ask for a referral he sent me on a barrage of tests. It was just lucky that I had proof that I didnt have a large or fatty liver otherwise I would have had to do the diet like everybody else.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
