Recently dx with sleep apnea

Newbie, there are a LOT of options. Sadly sleep Apnea is related to a lot of bad cardiac stuff, like heart attacks, congestive failure and strokes... sigh...

But they have a bazillion things you can try and you may find something that WILL work despite today's panic!

Me, I just say I'm a BORG (from Star Trek) and carry on!

Does knowing you have sleep apnea before you have surgery important? Can I check it out when the dust settles?

It's best if you know before.

1. If you have sleep apnea it's a co-morbidity that insurance will take into account when approving you for surgery.

2. If you have sleep apnea it impacts the anesthesia that you're given during surgery.

3. It impacts your general health - with sleep apnea you are probably not getting as good a rest as possible, and you want to be getting that rest in order to heal properly.

4. Not getting sufficient rest can also impact weight loss negatively.

Your surgeon may ask you to have a sleep study done before approving you for the surgery, and it truly is a good idea.

Nose cup or full face mask, I still wake up after about 4 hours gasping and in a panic. I'm not sure if I will ever be able to wear it all night long. I wish I could I'm sure that I would feel better.

This is going to sound ridiculous to you but please hear me out: why not try putting it on while you're sitting around relaxing in the evening before bed? Maybe watch TV or read while you have it on for a little while just to get used to it?

You would think the first thing I do when I wake up is rip off the mask but I don't. I'll lay there for awhile as I'm waking up as I'm that comfortable with it after almost 6 years.

My surgeon told me that she had a very close friend that died shortly after her surgery due to sleep apnea. She sees things in a whole different light since then. She almost cried telling me and my husband. She gave me the "I don't want to loose you too" talk. I could tell it was sincerely coming from the heart. Yes loosing the weight will probably take care of things in the long run but until then I will follow Dr's orders.

I was diagnosed in February, it took some time to adjust to it, now it's like second nature to put it on before bed. My surgeon instructed to me to make sure I'm using it consistently at least 30 days prior to surgery, to improve oxygen levels. I must also bring my machine with me on the day of surgery.

I will talk to my PCP about getting a sleep study. Thanks for the info. I have been avoiding this topic for a while. It seems this journey is requiring my big girl panties more than I originally thought. "The easy way out" yeah right!

I was Dx during my sleep study for surgery. You know I slept crazy good at my sleep study and my energy level that day was off the charts, but I'm 24 days out, I've worn it every night. My AHI average is less than 3 and my mask is a 100% fit. For the life of me I can't stop ripping it off at night. Every night, on average it stays on 4 hours, occasionally around 2 and occasionally closer to 7. I wake up and it is off AND I put the mask away in my half asleep state. I never remember doing it. It makes me crazy. I wish I would stop. I'm sticking with it, I have faith I'll eventually get used to it and quit. If anyone has suggestions on keeping it on I'd love to hear them.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
