Can we have them?

From what my surgeon said and others have said here it seems most surgeons recommend not to use them for the first couple months. Not really sure what the reasoning is, I know some have been told because if you accidently swallow them they will block up what little stomach you have, however I personally have never accidently swallowed gum in my life, but who knows. You might want to ask your surgeon or NUT since opinions vary. Good Luck.

Gum is supposedly a no-no, don't know why, don't chew gum so I never looked into it. hard candy, okay if you are months out, wouldn't do it weeks out though. I hit up a sugar free jolly rancher every now and again.

My doctors say no, just in case you may swallow them.

No candy for me but I do chew gum on occasion. I am always in ketosis and it causes me to have some pretty bad breath... it also leaves a metallic taste in my mouth. With that said I always keep a pack of gum in the car just in case I am going to be in a meeting or talking closely with someone.

Gum is bad for you because of the empty calories and each piece has a few carbs. I make sure if I have 2 pieces of gum that day that I include those macros into my fitness pal so I dont go over what I am allowed daily.

Another reason for not chewing gum, so I have read, is the possibility of swallowing it. I am not a child... I dont swallow my gum lol.

Candy is just a " no no" because its empty calories and its not something you should be eating if your trying to lose. I see no issues eating candy in moderation if your at goal weight and maintaining.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
