I'm still preop, but I've been wondering about long term issues that may arise. I read somewhere that the new stomach may produce more acid and eventually lead to a stomach ulcer resulting in possibly having to remove the remainder of the little stomach that's left. Has anyone else researched this? It's worrying me. Any advice/input would be appreciated

Well I think is possible but thats why we are in a omeoprazole regimen before and after surgery. It is very important to take this medication before Breakfast so thay we dont have any problems with gerd or acid. I hope this can help you

I think it depends on the individual and one's diet after. For me, if I need to forever, I'm ok with it.

Not everyone is on omeoprazole regimen. It's just patient specific. I haven't had any regimen pre or post op.

Gosh, I don't know about the acid reducer. I stopped taking it because I didn't think I needed it. I guess I will ask about that...LOL At 4 months out there are still questions!

Well I have gerd so I have to take for a year after the surgery. But I do remember that at the pre op visit there two more patients taking the omeoprazole and neither one of then have gerd. I guess all depends on the dr recomendations. But let me tell you that since I am taking that I never have a acid reflux or anything like that.

I agree with you and besides is not that hard it actually help you to take this med. Is not thay bad.

I'm preop but I have to take nexium everyday now for the rest of my life so it wouldn't bother me! I just want to be healthy and stay that way!

My surgeon puts everyone on Omeprazole for 4 weeks post surgery. I was told for 10 years that I had GERD but the meds never helped. My surgeon found a Hiatal Hernia when he did my sleeve ( very common in obese people) and he repaired it. It was obviously what had been causing my pain because after it healed, I haven't needed acid meds since! = )

I have never been on a PPI, not before the surgery, and I don't need one now. Each Dr. is different, as each person is different also. Hard to say if you will need one or not.

I am on pepcid for 3 months but then I will take it if needed but have had acid for years so I anticipate will be a lifetime thing.

That's interesting, because I have bad stomach issues for 10+ years, meds on and off for about 4years. I just chalked it up to something I have to deal with for life. Maybe I have a hernia too. I guess I'll find out!

I have had gastritis for 12 years and took medication for years. It did improve some and I no longer needed daily medication. It was discovered a had a small hiatal hernia so that was fixed during surgery. My surgeon says the first few months tend to be bad for reflux especially if you've had prior issues and for me it definitely has been. He prescribes a PPI to everyone for the first few months because even if you do not have a history of reflux it could be an issue. Hopefully mine gets better with time and I don't require medication forever, but like someone else posted I'd rather be thin and on a medication than fat!
