Long term success for MX patients are the same as other patients. As for care we use our PCP for follow up and if there are any issues the PCP feels are beyond his expertise, then we are recommended to a specialist.

But seriously, if your US doc refuses to treat you because of past treatment ...I wouldn't want him treating me anyway. That's shoddy ethics right there.

I agree. Long term success should be the same no matter where you have your surgery. I stayed stateside and was self pay. 6 weeks out today and I know as much as I can that my surgery was done properly, as are Mexican sleevers. My long term success is up to me and me alone.

My aunt got her band in MX before it was approved in the US, and no US docs would see her for follow up/fills. It was a huge issue. I'm interested in hearing more about what their follow up looks like.

I think it's VERY important to have a Dr planned before you go- someone that will support you and see you after your sleeve.

And I have to say also- that your actual success will depend on your decision to work the sleeve and let the sleeve work for you. It's a lifestyle change. Nothing less.

One last item people overlook is the head change. Any Dr can take 85% of your stomach to keep you from overeating for a certain period of time- but that will no change the reasons for the overeating- or the emotional parts. So please seek help to see WHY you are heavy first. Solve that problem BEFORE you solve the stomach issue :-)

And yes- Mexico is fine.

Happy losing

I had my lapbands in MX and now my sleeve and I've never had any problem with State side docs caring for me. Maybe it was because your aunt had a procedure that wasn't yet done in the US? I've had an array of complications from my lapband and never ever had any issue with getting care from many drs here.

My PCP is well aware of my sleeve and does all my follow up work.

I talked to my PCP prior to surgery in Mexico. He is happy to treat me for basic follow up type stuff (blood tests, basic prescriptions if necessary). He researched and find a colleague he likes that was willing to treat me post-op, if any complications were to arise or I had questions/concerns that required a bariatric specialist. I <3 my PCP. :)

Thankfully there isn't a ton of follow up with the sleeve, nothing your PCP can't do!

Marielove, like others have already said, the success rate for patients having their surgery done in Mexico is the same as those anywhere else.

In terms of aftercare, I always recommend that you have a PCP here in the states, and visit them prior to going to Mexico. Explain to them your plan, and make sure they are on board with you and willing to provide you follow up care as needed. Most of the doctors in Mexico also provide you with a record of what they did for you to take home with you and give to your doctor. There are very few post-op complications, so in all likelihood, everything will be fine. And, we are always here on VST to help you, offer advice and answer any questions you may have as well.

My insurance company does not cover anything related to the surgery I paid out of pocket for. I never had any complications and we have to get creative with the medical billing codes for the bloodwork... then it is covered. :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
