Post-Op Taste Change Question

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved last Monday, April 8th.

If I didn't have the accountability of having to meet with my surgical team next week for my check-up, I wouldn't even be drinking Protein Shakes at all. I can't stand them post-op. They're all too sweet and rich, and give me a sugar headache and nausea like I've just eaten half a birthday cake by myself - or something equally as rich & sugar-filled. I've tried unflavored Protein a couple of times, but it's not sitting well with my new stomach. =\

I feel gross. I don't want to drink anything aside from Smart Water. No soft foods allowed 'til April 30th. Gah.

Is it normal for your tastes to change this much after surgery?

From my experience, quite normal to have tastes change in that way. I never had an issue with Protein Shakes (except for first week), but can say I no longer enjoy drinking plain Water at all post op (month 9 now). Water was REALLY bad to drink straight up until month 5 and then it got not so bad. I usually flavor my water. It is the only way for me to stay on top of water goals. To me Dasani drops is the only brand I can keep drinking all day without developing burning in the throat.

My tastes changed alot. food just didn't taste very good for quite some time - really helped get that first 100# off!

The only negative part was that plain ole Water got very tinny tasting to me.

That is much better now, but I don't love it like I used to... I use alot of flavorings, lime slices etc to make Water palatable.

I noticed a big change in flavor in the things I use to love but it makes it that much easier not to want to eat them now. Water still hurts going down even if I flavor it. I drink the premiere Protein Drinks from costco to get the max amount of Protein in 11 ounces. 2 a day gives me what I need.

Has anyone found taste for fruity flavors changed?

I was a banana and peach flavor addict pre op, but now said flavors make me gag. It is strange. I also feel my olfactory and taste sensors are magnified now where I can really get involved in the find spices and flavors of delicacies. It is almost a super power. :)

I enjoy the ability to be very discerning about the ingredients in prepared food. Eating Protein and low carb has probably helped this. That and I am no longer shoveling food into my mouth.

I can no longer eat fresh ground pepper--it's way too strong tasting to me and ruins my food. I have to eat pre-ground pepper. I've been eating fresh ground since I was a kid and always loved it--it's sort of strange.

I will be 4 weeks post op tomorrow and I am just now able to taste things. Some are better some are worse. I just love that I can sample a bite or two of everything on my plate and get full and satisfied:) I was afraid stuff would taste different forever lol

Yep they change I could not stand fruit punch after surgery and now don't mind it. I've also found my sense of smell is so much stronger.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
