11 weeks post-op....When does the heartburn stop...?

Recommended Posts

And what are you doing about it?

And while I'm at it...My ability to take in solids and liquids is totally different. I can drink a 12oz Protein Shake in 10-15 minutes, but I'm limited to 3-4 oz of solids in any given 30+ minute period. Do liquids pass through that quickly??

Thanks!

-Alan

Are you taking an acid reducer. If not call your doc.

I take Prilosec twice a day and it totally controls the heartburn. Feel better!

Not only do liquids pass through much more quickly, they do not expand your stomach (giving that full feeling) like food does. So what you describe in relation to liquid vs food is very typical.

I never had acid reflux or hearburn prior to surgery so this has been a whole new experience for me. I'm 2 months post-op and the first 3 weeks I had reflux often. I took a Pepcid every day. Since then it has gotten much better. I probably take a Pepcid about 4x a week now instead of every day and sometimes just plain ol' Tums will take care of it.

My doctor puts us on protonix for the first 30-90 days depending on the person and symptoms. You come home from the hospital with it, this is an amazing Heart burn medication!!! I am officially off of it, but when I get the occasion heart burn I take it and it works quickly!

Ask your doctor for something, heartburn can cause esophogus issues quickly....you don't want that!

I am 8 months out and still take Prilosec daily due to heartburn. I can go 1-2 days without but by the 3rd day I need the Prilosec.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
