Autoimmune Issues and VSG?

Recommended Posts

As much as the vanity aspects are wonderful' date=' decreasing the RA symptoms to be able to keep active and work were my primary goals. If it can keep me working even a few months longer, it will have paid for itself, even being self pay. I was disappointed afew months back when I was hoping for a major long term remission and it wasn't happening. Feel great now! Granted, it's summer and I switched to a desk job but I'm hoping I've hit the threshold where the meds are able to control with the lower weight. Joints feel good 90% of the time now. Pray it will stay this way. Blessing to you all fighting the battle! Stay stubborn and strong![/quote']

Thank you so much for your encouragement! RA sucks. All autoimmune diseases suck. Hearing how well you are doing gives so much hope!! I like "stay stubborn and stay strong" you do have to be stubborn to fight RA :)

I have lupus and RA as well. I have to stop the methotrexate injection 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after surgery. Is there anything out there that would help with the pain? I'm terrified of flair ups and the pain that I know I will have.

My doctor said I could take Tylenol, but to me Tylenol doesn't do crap so I just rested when I needed too and didn't push myself too hard. Sorry that's not much of a help. You can talk to your surgeon or your rheumatologist and they may suggest some other stuff.

I'm the same way, Tylenol doesn't help as much as my OxyContin. I see my rheumatologist tomorrow, hopefully he can come up with something. Thank you!

Do you have to go off of the folic acid too? Never thought if that until just now?!?!

I find that cortisone injections help me the most. Actually, closest I feel to normal, ever. Dr gives them to me right in office. They are systemic so works on all joints. I look forward to them and since I can only get them 4 times a year (and they only last a few weeks) I sometimes strategize timing like when i need to go out of town for work, vacations, etc. Now I don't know how these shots are handled before surgery. May need to avoid preop and a little postop. If you haven't tried these shots, I strongly recommend you ask your Dr. Does more than any pain pill. And just an FYI to preops, after surgery you can no longer take NSAIDS... (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) like Aleve, my old favorite. Wayyy too hard on little tummy. Only Tylenol (and pain meds).

I never had to go off my folic acid, but I did just to be safe. I was only off that a week prior to surgery still off it now,

I have AS and use Remicade to help with symptoms, given by IV every six weeks. I'm just starting on my pre- surgery diet for surgery in late June (no date yet- just submitted to insurance). My rheumatologist told me they wanted my last infusion to be at least four weeks before surgery and I can restart Remicade two weeks after surgery. I have been very stable and almost no symptoms since starting Remicade and I'm so excited to be able to exercise after surgery- crew team here I come! I have also been told that the band is contraindicated for folks with autoimmune issues so it's good that you folks are switching to sleeve! Small silver lining about having AS, Lupus, RA etc is that we're already used to lots of pain- chronic, which can be worse than acute and we'll probably have a better pain tolerance right after surgery and that IV will be a piece of cake! :)

Hey fibromyalgia is not fun either. I have both RA and fibro. I can tolerate my RA pain but when my fibro is bad I have a hard time. I've also never found a medication that has helped

My RA so I rely on just knowing what bothers me and working out, which is hard to do with RA.

I was thinking the same thing this morning...it is good to be used to a higher level of pain and to have a high tolerance for it when it comes to surgeries if for nothing else, lol....we will all do very well!!!

Hopefully the surgery and resulting weight loss will help all of us and our auto immune disorders!! I want my body to focus on healing itself instead of fighting and destroying itself for a change, forever!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
