Am I sabotaging myself?

Hi all,

I'm 8 weeks post op and about 24kgs down. I am having huge difficulties with food and am still throwing up anything that isn't thin Soup or yoghurt (not getting all the Water down either but I'm getting there with that). Now even the thought of yoghurt is making me nauseous and I'm sick to the back teeth of soup! Unfortunately the same thing happened with the shakes and now I can rarely take any without throwing it straight up again. I did start progressing to purée and loose soft food a few weeks ago but it really hurt my sleeve and now I seem to have gone backwards!

So my Protein intake is way down and I'm starting to feel a whole lot of buyers remorse.

Weirdly, there are two exceptions to my sleeves' 'liquid only' rule, neither of which are healthy options, but I'm going crazy and can't resist them! The first one is cheese - anything that turns creamy in my mouth (blue, Brie, babybel, etc), or dry crunchy things that crunch up to nothing - breadsticks, corn Snacks (quavers, monster munch, etc.).

Now I'm only taking in about 120g of soup 2 times per day, plus maybe 40g of yoghurt or Breakfast Cereal mush, so my surgeon just said to concentrate on my Fluid intake, eat whatever I fancy and not worry at all about calories until my intake is up, but I can't get over the fact that I'm eating cheese and crisps!!!! The crisps are under 100 calories per bag, and the most cheese can eat is maybe 50g, and one of these is instead of a soup or yoghurt meal, not as well as.

I know the cheese is helping with protein, but i'm also conscious of the fat, and the crisps do have some minor nutrition values, but..... It just all seems so wrong!

Have you contacted your doctor? It sounds like you could have a structure or something. I would focus on the Water, for sure. And if you can get water down, try the watery Protein RTD drinks. Isopure, I think? It's like Gatorade consistency (basically water) but has protein. One of the sleevers in my local support group said a few weeks ago that he switched to a straw (after consulting the NUT) bc sipping was actually harder to get fluids down & that he had a much easier time with water ever since. Definitely get the protein in however you can. If it's via cheese, then so be it. Just keep an eye on calories.

I am in touch with the surgeon and my NUT - they don't seem particularly concerned but I can't help thinking this can't be right???? I'll look up Isopure (haven't seen it her - I'm in the UK- but I'm sure it's available online)....

What do you mean by a structure? An obstruction?

Btw, the straws really work for me too!!! I can drink soooo much more with a straw than by sipping!

I have had string cheese and it goes down just fine. My weight loss has not suffered at all! I would say get as much Protein and fluids in as you can! Have you tried scrambled eggs? That is another major source of protein I use. Oh yeah I eat low fat cottage cheese daily. Best wishes! Tina

Thanks Tina! I'll give string cheese a try... I've tried cottage cheese every so often throughout my life to see if (now at 41!) I'm grown-up enough to appreciate it, but I can't stand it! Do you mix it with something or have it straight? i can't believe how many people here love it- i must be doing something wrong!!!

scrambled eggs I LOVE, but I think it's going to be a long time before my sleeve chooses to enjoy them sadly.... Thanks for the tips though! :-)

A stricture is a tightening it narrowing of the esophagus or stomach. It is a risk of this surgery. Some people develop it after surgery and then they have a really hard time getting anything down. I don't think it sounds like you have one, because you can eat the crisps and they are solid. It isn't an obstruction, because usually they don't block everything, they just tighten so that it is real hard for most stuff to pass. When something gets stuck, you throw up pretty quickly.

Your issues sound a lot like mine, first the texture of eggs (that I use to love) make me sick. Im constantly eating imported cheeses and thin Water crackers w/ thin slices of meat. I can handle things that are crunchy and or slider foods of course. You will find out over the next few weeks what makes you happy and it will become your routine. Eating is different for everyone on here, some people are eating things I cant imagine post surgery but all the more to them if they can get it down. This surgery is to restrict our consumption not our choices, the choices are your decision.

cheese is a huge part of my diet at 7 weeks and it is not hurting my loss. It is good Protein and much easier to digest than meat protein for me. I also eat a few pretzel sticks with it. My NUT has those on my diet from week 3. I hate yogurt and have not eaten so much as a teaspoon. Everyone else seems to love it so I know how you feel with the cottage cheese. I doubt you can overeat at this point. If the doctor has told you to eat whatever you tolerate at this point, you probably ought to go with it.

I'm the same way. I've been living off of Laughing Cow Light 35 calorie wedges and plain Chex. Nothing else seems to agree with me at this point and I'm getting super depressed about it. But hopefully this too shall pass.

I had the same exact symptoms for 3 weeks. My sleeve was too tight and food wouldn't pass from my esophagus to my stomach if it were too thick. I couldn't eat farina, creamed Soups, mashed potatoes, fish. Things got stuck and I threw up frequently. My surgeon did an endoscopy and stretched the passage a bit. I still have excellent restriction, but can tolerate foods much better.

Definitely don't worry about the calories in your cheese, you consume so little, eat the good stuff. I have never watched fat in anything I eat and I am at goal. Good Luck with your issue, I hope your doctor fixes it.

Epasseri how many weeks post-op are you?

I saw my surgeon this week and he was happy from a health point of view but concerned about the boredom starting to get me down. He has said that he would do a stretch for me if I wanted it, and I'm thinking about it..... Really I'm hoping that just knowing that he's ready and willing to do something might be enough to help me power through, and with a bit of luck I'll only have a short time left where I'm so reliant on soup.....

Having said that, I'm hoping that I turned a corner this week, after my check-up; I've managed some soft food at last! Some canned ravioli and some ready-meal cottage pie (ready-made crap is much softer than home-made - this must be the only time when ready meals are better than home-made! Lol! ) - fingers crossed this will last!!!

      Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

        I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

        I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.
