Irregular results from Barium study.... Kinda like a "pocket" found

Recommended Posts

At my 8 week follow-up appointment, I reiterated to the doctor that I have a pain in my chest when I eat. It feels like all food and drinks get stuck for awhile. This has been going on since the surgery. I've been complaining about it since my one week follow-up. But, my other issues (severe nausea & lack of any nutrients for the first 6 weeks) sort of overshadowed it, I guess.

So, he did a Barium test and we saw that a portion of it got stuck in a little pocket, of sorts. He then gave me Water, and it washed out eventually. The doctor wasn't too worried saying he thinks it will workout on its own. He said it could have been an undetected hiatal hernia or something that needs to be stretched out (I say "something", but he used a word I don't remember). He said let him know if it gets worse.

Anyone else have irregular results from the Barium test? Should I be worried and push my doctor to take the next step? It's not excruciating pain, but it does stop me from eating enough food or drink enough water.

What do your instincts tell you?

I'd probably ask him to go ahead and stretch of at all possible. What if it doesn't resolve itself? I'd want to get better ASAP rather than wait 6 more weeks without proper nutrition.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
