Walking a lot....how much is a lot

Recommended Posts

Everyone says walk a lot after the surgery. I know everyone is different so what do the veterans think is a lot?

I was walking 2 to 3 laps around the hospital floor and my nurses seem happy with that. They marked me as "compliant" on my chart in the "walking" box. :-P

Any more than 3 laps and I'd get nauseous and feel worse.

I was walking several laps every 15 minutes. I was hoping they would just tell me to go home. I was really needing to get my new life going. Plus I was angious to get out to go shopping and sightseeing and to the beach... Which I did :)

I had outpatient in Las Vegas (baby!), so I started walking after a 4 hour nap all around the casino floors. The next day, I'm sure I got no less than 5 miles in walking around MGM, Venetian, Paris and all over downtown. The day after was the same thing.

I just walked as often as I could. I don't think it is possible to walk too much. I know it helped my recovery.

I think walk with what you are comfortable. I did one short lap the first time. about every 1.5 to 2 hours built it up. Ended up with 7 full laps before I went to bed that night. It felt good for me. The first day I was home I was wiped out. Just walked enough to get the gas out.

Now that I am 8 days out, I am walking about a mile twice a day with the dog. Taking almost an hour, can't go fast otherwise my big incision gets to feeling "tight". But the weather has been beautiful here in the Dallas area so that has been a big help.

I walked starting 4 hours after my surgery. I set a goal of 10 minutes at the top of every hour. When the TV shows changed. I would get up and walk walk walk. I would just keep doing it till my time was up. If I didn;t get in at least 7-10 laps I wo0ud not go back and watch tv. I did this every hour and I truly felt the best when walking. I hated sitting or laying. There was far too much pressure in my chest.

I walked about 6 miles getting up every 15 minutes to pee that night. Does that count? LOL I'm sure I annoyed my roommate, but when you gotta go, you gotta go!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
