Recommended Posts

I will be having my surgery march 25th. In your experiences with different Protein Shakes which ones do you like or don't like?? And where did you buy them at?? Thanx everybody I'm just trying not to spend a fortune on trying out shakes hoping I can find one that I like.

Big fan of the premiers that you can get from costco or sams. I don't do powders. I am not a fan of muscle milk (too sweet) or isopures (funky after taste). The EAS brand is my next favorite, If for some reason I can't get premiers.

I have tried all kinds. I have settled on Premier pre made chocolate Protein Shakes from Sams with 30 grams. I don't love them, but I can tolerate one every morning.

We love the Nature's Way Meta-Boost in strawberry (drugstore.com). Trader Joe's chocolate is pretty good also.

unjury is the best Protein powder nutritionally, but the only flavors that are good are:

chocolate (mix with Peanut Butter powder... AMAZING)

chicken Soup (mix with Water or chicken broth)

Unflavored (mix in broths, etc, to add protein).

The chocolate with Peanut Butter powder is so good, I actually crave it.

Good luck!

I tried the Unjury chocolate, vanilla, and chicken Soup pre-op, as well as nectar Fuzzy Navel and strawberry Kiwi. I am one of the few who don't like them. I did tons of research and ordered those because they really are the favorites of many. My personal favorite that has been a Godsend is the Premier chocolate with 30g of Protein. I actually enjoy them, and they don't have that funky protein taste that the others did. To me, they taste very close to Ensure, if you've ever had that. In my personal opinion, steer clear of the Premier vanilla. It is completely different and pretty close to nasty. I get the Premier at costco. If I remember correctly, it's $24 for a pack of 18.

Over in the food and Nutrition forum there is a sticky for where to get Protein samples...you can try a lot without putting out too much cash. I was surprised by some that seemed like I would like them, but when I tried them I was glad I didn't buy a whole tub. I like vanilla & choc splendor Unjury, and choc and vanilla Trutein. I have some RTD Premier from costco, but not my favorites. I like some of the RTD Oh Yeah drinks, but most of them have to be diluted with milk for me, too sweet and too much aftertaste. Mixed with milk they are better. I add half a pack of Starbucks Via in the morning (caffeine is okay on my plan). I also have some sugar free syrups that I add sometimes, but I have to use more milk or it gets way too sweet.

Have to watch some if the premade and drugstore shakes. They are made for weight trainers and not weight losers! They tend to have much higher Carb count. 8 grams or more! That can really hinder weight loss. Most the name brands for weight loss like Bariatric Advantage, Celebrate and Unjury are no Carb and the correct protein. Celebrate ENS-Protein has the Multivitamin and Calcium already in it! I drink one when I have a hectic day and I am halfway there! Just watch your nutritional values....it's so easy ti shoot yourself in the foot!

That's true if you are on an ultra low carb plan. I'm not. I just track it in MFP and make sure I am within my guidelines.

I really love the chocolate Premier Nutrition ready made shake. Next would be EAS Myoplex in chocolate fudge.

Lol...the premier vanilla is beyond nasty. chocolate is much more doable.

After trying about 5 different kinds, the only one I didn't gag on was Premier. In fact it tastes just like choc.milk.

I like the Syntrax Nectar line the best. You can find different online stores that sell sampler packs. It really helps before taking the plunge and buying the big tubs of a flavor. But I tend to go with the vanilla Bean Torte. It tastes great, like vanilla cake batter on its own. I also like stocking up on the vanilla because I think it's more versatile than other flavors. You can blend in flavor extracts, jello/pudding mix powder, cocoa powder, PB2, instant coffee, frozen fruit, etc. Helps keep it interesting, and saves me money on buying all different flavored Protein powders. Sometimes you just gotta keep trying brands till you find a winner!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
