When did everyone have their first drink if alcohol?

Recommended Posts

I'm 4 weeks post-op, and I'll be attending a bachelor party. It's going to be pretty tame, just doing some fishing. My nutritionist doesn't recommend (based on empty calories), but I'm just wondering when everyone else tried their first taste of alcohol post-op?

Before my surgery, I loved whiskeys and darker beers. I won't be touching beer, but I still have quite an extensive collection of whiskeys! Has anyone tried whiskey?

I was told to wait 6 months, but at my 3 month post op, my weight loss was good, blood work was great, so he said anytime after 4 months. I had a 1/2 glass of wine at all but 5 months post op. I was never a big drinker, so once in awhile works for me.

I'll be 5 1/2 weeks for the party. Was thinking of diluting whiskey with Water or just bring wine. I want to do it at home first, so my wife can take care of me if needed! Lol!!! She's a nurse!

My surgeon says 90 days, though I know others say to wait a year. We were told that the alcohol may affect you more quickly (and remember, you will probably have not only a smaller stomach, but an empty one)--and that it also may wear off more quickly.

I waited 7 months and it was for a special dinner with my wife. We had some fine Chardonnay.

I asked today and I was told a month out. A glass of wine sounds heavenly to me. So next week, I am going to be a happy girl.

YOLO brother, go get your drink on!

For me, I've made the decision that if I can climb up on an operating table and let some Dr. cut my properly functioning stomach out, I could pass up the hooch for a while to make myself a healthier individual. I was a pretty big drinker which contributed to my almost 300 lbs. Just saying no, won't hurt me, but the alternative....who knows. Don't need it to have a good time, don't need the extra calories or the unpleasantries that come with it. Chances are it won't be a big deal, but then again, I'd rather just not. You see folks on the board knocking it back early so, like I said YOLO. Come back and tell us how you do!

I'll definitely let everyone know how I do! I'll only partake in it once I've fulfilled my quota on Proteins, and fluids!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
