Hi, I'm Rosie and i had my sleeve on 29th Jan. Op went smooth and I am still feeling euphoric. Weight is coming down nicely and have lost 29 lbs so far so am over the moon. I am fortunate enough to have an amazingly supportive family and they have looked after me well. I ditched the pain relief after a week as needed to get back to work and need to drive so thought it safer. I have had no real pain from wounds and other than getting what I call a bad indigestion when trying to work out my limits over the past 3 weeks everything has been fine. Being 3 weeks in I did have jacket potatoes with hummus a couple of nights last week (no skin) and again other than eating too quickly and too bigger mouthfuls at a time (must remember to use the teaspoon) everything was fine. On Saturday I had to go officiate at a competition, and whilst I didn't go jogging i did have to rush around a bit and it was certainly the most active I have been since the op. Since then I have been getting an intermittent stabbing pain inside my tummy. it isn't constant but it is quite uncomfortable. I went back to slim-fast and thin Soup thinking I might have pushed my luck with the potato but still getting the pain. Everything that is going in one end seems to be coming out the other so I don't think I have any blockages or leaks etc. It isn't a constant pain so I am assuming no infection.

So my question is could I have a hernia? My Surgeon told me he put a stitch in to stop me getting one (was a bit dopey when he told me but i'm sure that is what he said and I do have a large dimple). I have just been moving the lightest of things around like the kettle and doing the odd stretch to get things and the pain certainly gets worse then.

Does anybody have any ideas? If it is a hernia will it go away on it's own? What can i do to help it? do I need to go back to the hospital? Are they dangerous? My GP wouldn't have a clue as here in the UK they tend to know zero about bariatric stuff and you have to go to a specialist. Hopefully one of you lovely people out there will be able to point me in the right direction.

Thanks for reading

Rosie

I had similar pain after my hysterectomy. I think it's just things moving back into place and adjusting. It went away after a few weeks. However H Pylori causes a sharp pain like that too. You have to take a bunch of antibiotics. A simple blood test will confirm or rule it out.

Hi, thanks for the information. As the pain was getting worse I called the Bariatric team and managed to discuss with them. It's not a hernia after all but it seems that I have managed to rip my internal stitches in the stomach wall by doing too much too soon. Nurse was really kind explaining that before this operation was available as key hole surgery people would have a great big scar down their tummy which was a constant reminder to take things easy. Unfortunately because it is a just a set of smaller incisions it is common for people to get a bit over enthusiastic. So no driving for the next week or so and no housework. This whole thing has been a massive learning curve for me and I am still making plenty of mistakes. I stopped my pain relief after a week but needed something stronger than the paracetamol so took solpedine this morning which have codeine as well. Took them on an empty tummy so have spent the last hour being sick. Am feeling quite sorry for myself now. I won't do that again in a hurry though. I hope that people reading this will learn by mistakes.

R x

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
