Ever in the clear.

Six days out and reading some horror stories regarding leaks. When are we considered medically in the clear from leaks? Are we ever?

It is generally accepted that you are fully healed at 6 weeks. If you haven't had any bad negative side effects by then you can assume that you are in the clear.

Thanks for the reply. 5 weeks to go. I'm following my post op diet to the T.

I agree with OTR. One thing that has stuck with me is a story on here of a woman a year out. She ended up with a slow leak that infected her lungs. ( sorry I can't remember her name) I would say while 6 weeks is in the clear also be very diligent to how you are feeling for the next few years. Don't dismiss any odd symptoms, it's always better to be safe and get checked out.

This kind of scares me since I'm 3 months and have had some stinging from my 2 main incisions.

I don't think a leak would manifest itself as incisional pain. But at 3months out id recommend getting it looked at. That is of course unless you recall over working & tearing the incision, in which case I'd say otr still healing.

Not that I can think of. Then again, the stinging tends to happen when I flex. I was dry heaving a few days ago and afterwards I noticed my incisions were stinging.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
