Nichole Richie--Band? Bypass?

Recommended Posts

I don't know what bothers me the most about this article...the speculation that a relatively normal weight young woman might have had weight loss surgery, or the fact that once again the media can't quite distinquish between bypass and the band:

------

Nicole Richie is denying speculation that she underwent gastric bypass surgery and then had the operation reversed.

Rumors began spreading this week after the New York Post ran a blind item claiming a "Hollywood starlet" had gastric bypass surgery – and then, after losing too much weight, went in to have the gastric band removed.

The Simple Life star's rep says that reports linking Richie to the blind item are "ridiculous."

"It is not Nicole," her publicist tells PEOPLE. "There are a ton of 'Hollywood starlets.'"

Richie's thinness has been the subject of much debate. She had dropped to around 90 lbs. – making her extremely thin, even at 5'2," PEOPLE reported recently. Last month she decided to undergo diagnostic treatment for her inability to put on weight.

Richie's father, the singer Lionel Richie, urged his daughter to seek help. "She's gonna be fine," he told PEOPLE recently. "She's worrying me to death, but she's gonna be okay."

As for Richie's reality series, The Simple Life, production on the new season was slated to begin last week but was put on hold while she underwent treatment for her condition. Now, however, the green light is on.

"Nicole has informed us she's ready to work, and we're looking at a calendar to see what works best for all," the show's spokesman told New York's Daily News for its Wednesday editions. <!---art_end_box.gif--->

I think i would find out where this article came from and write to "inform" them that if they are going to be speculating about someone that they need to at least have their facts straight.

Im with you I dont know what is more disturbing

YA THINK ? LOL She is SO THIN. She looks horrible.

Why the stars dont come out and say they have one i will never know. Do they think we are idiots.Just like Lara Flynn Boyle , and Calista Flockhart. Im sure they both have either had one or have one now . They are so sickly

yes, too bad they couldn't get their facts right about the procedures.

But as to whether someone has WLS as a preventative measure opens a whole other line of thinking. I am not sure if it is much different from a "starlet" having WLS so she doesn't have to face any weight gain, than one of our low BMI folks having the band because the need to stop before they do get as big as I am, or bigger. I think that says something about our socity when someone who is tiny under goes something as drastic as WLS so they don't become a fat cow at size 6.

When my band slipped, I was at a BMI of 25.5 .. not ideal, but *very* close (even though I couldn't see that in the mirror).

I didn't think twice about being rebanded to keep from piling on weight (which, of course, I ended up doing between the time I slipped and the time I was rebanded).

I can definitely see why someone who struggles with self esteem/self image issues and is constantly being called fat in the media for the whole world to see (as Nicole was, back when she first started filming Simple Life) would choose to take preventitive measures to ensure they didn't become obese.

Is it the right thing to do? Who knows. Fact is though, we live in a world where being overweight is not socially acceptable, even though the majority of the US and Aus are technically overweight.

Didnt here boyfriend Djam or whatever he was called have a lapband and had lost a heap of weight? That's where that rumour probably started.

Who knows? She was never what I'd call fat but she was much plumper and she could have been a binge eater or really struggled away from the cameras to maintain the weight she was. But I'd doubt the truth of it to be honest, it's probably just more media garbage. So many untouched up photos of her and her teeny bit of saggy belly skin and poor bony body are in all the tabloids and there's certainly no scars.

I think she's unwell to be honest.

I believe I read it was the bypass he had, but who believes what they read these days? lol

Yea, I agree with you that she probably didn't have any surgery at all and is just unwell. Was just saying I could see why someone would do it as a preventitive measure.

Nicole Richie wants to make something clear: Her scrawny figure is all natural, and not the result of any medical intervention. The undersize tabloid staple is peeved that people believe she's the unnamed "young Hollywood starlet" from a recent New York Post blind item who underwent "secret bypass surgery," only to have it undone when she "lost too much weight."

"It just doesn't stop," Nicole fumed on her MySpace page on Tuesday. "So, I gain a little bit of weight, and I'm accused of having a gastric bypass surgery reversed? It's pathetic of Page Six to insinuate I have done this."

Continues the irate and (maybe, just maybe) infinitesimally meatier Richie, "Anyone that knows anything about this surgery would know that legally, you must be at least 100 pounds overweight to even have the surgery done, and [it] is a serious, life changing procedure—not one to throw around as a joke or a rumor."

It's not surprising that Nicole isn't laughing off the rumors. After all, she knows a thing or two about the surgery: Her former fiancé, Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein, dropped 155 pounds—almost twice her body weight—after undergoing the procedure in 2003.

The blind item, which claimed the mystery starlet's "recent four-day stint at a health clinic" was really to have the bypass removed, appeared three weeks after the eating disorder-denying Richie announced she was seeking diagnostic treatment to discover why she was failing to pack on the pounds.

The evidence, however, remains in Nicole's favor: Since she decided to get help, she hasn't gone four straight days without being snapped by the paparazzi.

"It is not Nicole," her rep insists to People, pooh-poohing the implication as "ridiculous." "There are a ton of 'Hollywood starlets.'" Rants Richie, who will soon begin work on the fifth season of "The Simple Life" with newly reinstated BFF Paris Hilton: "I've given a statement I am in the process of putting on weight, and that should be enough. It's a shame to hear that instead of hearing supportive words, someone needs to spin it into some negative, absurd way."

I don't believe for a second that she had the band or bypass. Personally, I feel we're all in the same boat. Those of us who are overweight and those who are underweight are all struggling with some form of eating disorder. She deserves support, not rumor and speculation.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
