Recommended Posts

Had my edg and I have gastritis and ulcers. The doctor gave me protonix for what I thought was the ulcers but after researching I think it is for both.. My question is if I have gastritis which is inflammation of the lining of my stomach then is it safe to have the sleeve done? I'm worried with the small space and swelling I won't even be able to get Water down...my doctor gave me the impression that it will be healed b4 surgery...but im uneasy.

Sounds like the medicine he gave you should clear it up before the surgery, but just to ease your concerns you should call him with any questions you have about it.

I have had gastritis for the past 10 years. It never goes away. It is an irritation to the inside of the stomach/esophagus and it can get better with the proper medication, but it could be an issue at any time. My surgeon said that you do run the risk of having it flare up immediately after surgery, but he is going to put me on medication for the first 6 months (or longer if necessary) to help. I have never been told that gastritis makes your stomach swollen. I would ask your surgeon.

I did ask my surgeon and the meds I'm taking are meant to offset the inflammation..

If it wasn't safe, your surgeon wouldn't be performing the operation.

I was diagnosed with mild gastroenteritis after my endoscopy also and put on 20mg omeprazole and I was told to continue it for 6 months after the surgery. From what I've seen, it's pretty common for us sleevers and not a whole lot to get worried over.

I was also diagnosed with ulcers and gastritis when I had my EGD. My doctor told me no smoking and no sodas for 3 months, and I'm taking Protonix 2x a day. He said my stomach wouldn't heal right after the surgery otherwise. It is absolutely killing me, but trying to look at it as I was going to have to give up my bad habits eventually anyway, just getting an early start. Good luck on your surgery! Please let us know how it goes :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
