Hi. I'm preparing for a Feb 21st surgery. My work just gave me Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) paper work to fill out. Did any of you have to do that? I just want to make sure the doctor doesn't write down anything that indicates the type of surgery.

I had to. My work requires the Dr to fill out a portion too. And I had to give it back to my employer 30 days in advance.

Ok...I was wondering if it was normal to have to fill it out? I have plenty of sick leave built up to cover the time I'm out.

Well its basically to protect your time off. They have to hold your position for 12 weeks per year. It is a good thing to do. Make sure they do not want your DR to fill out anything to avoid delay.

I had to submit FMLA paperwork also. Like mentioned previously it is for your protection. It secures your job while you are gone and also covers you if you have to miss work due to medical reasons related to the surgery.

I choose not to share that I an having surgery. I was also concerned about my boss finding out what type of surgery I was having. I called HR and was told that my boss/ supervisor doesn't see the forms. Everything goes through the HR dept.

On the forms there is a part that says to be completed by employer. Ny HR dept told me i could complete that part. It only ask info about job title and job description. I gave the forms to my doctor to complete. My doctor faxed them directly to HR. I was told that after it's been approved that my supervisor will get a letter saying I was approved for FMLA and the dates I will be out. No exlpanation or reasons why. Legally your supervisor can't ask you questions about it and HR can't release any additional information to your supervisor.

I've been on fmla before and yes but it goes to HR and your boss does not see it. It's confidential. Fmla protects your job.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
