How likely is it to gain weight after?

Recommended Posts

I'm having surgery 2/26. I am very excited to finally lose the weight. Still a little scared, though.

How likely is it to gain all the weight back after the sleeve? I know the stomach can stretch, but can it stretch that much?

I'm definitely not a grazer, a sweet freak, or a calorie drinker. I eat meat....and lots of it. I eat too much at 1 sitting.

Any advice is appreciated. This site is awesome, & has answered a lot of my questions/fears.

IMO, it is impossible to gain all the weight back. The stomach will stretch a bit, but we're talking about only a couple ounces. It will never return to its previous size. My surgeon laughed at me when I asked him.

The bottom line is you will lose weight if you consume fewer calories than you burn. With the sleeve, even at 20 months out, I can get about 1,400 calories in on a good day. Most people get less than that, but I am at my goal weight and in maintenance mode.

Have no fear ... you will be a huge loser!

Man, I am almost six months out and I could TOTALLY put weight back on if I didn't exercise! I agree with PDxMan- I think it would be seriously difficult to put it all back on- that's for sure. It's a struggle, not that I tried this all but once or twice, to eat more than 1400 calories per day. I average 800-1100. Hope this helps.

It's easier than people think to gain weight with the sleeve. There is a popular thread right now of a woman who self admittedly was eating too much, too soon, and at 7 weeks out has gained 20 pounds. She doesn't disclose any symptoms that would seem to indicate that the gain is from some other source, but will not acknowledged the fact that in previous posts she had admitted to not being able to stop eating. Even though she is in the soft stage still, she has gained. IT IS POSSIBLE, and in my opinion, this type of thing is why psych evaluations are SO important.

You CAN gain weight. YOU CAN GAIN WEIGHT. YOU CAN GAIN WEIGHT.

There are two or three threads out there specifically titled "You can gain weight" so yes, it's entirely possible.

As for the stomach stretching like that? NO WAY.

But you don't need a stretchy stomach if you choose to eat high calorie foods that slide. It's easy to consume enough soda, alcohol, ice cream or even chips and Cookies to gain weight if you choose to do so.

No, not immediately post op. But definitely in maintenance. The sleeve relies on restriction. If you eat around the restriction, it's as if you never had a surgery.

That said, I think it takes effort. It means completely ignoring everything you know is right. It means indulging in self destructive behavior. It means that instead of eating a pizza in a sitting, eating a piece every single time you have room.

And you'll know what you're doing. You won't be able to mindlessly eat an extra thousand calories at dinner because you won't have room. You'd have to choose to do it.

It's a tired line but no less true for that: The sleeve is a tool. Just a tool. How you use it is entirely up to you. Overcoming bad habits and being honest with yourself about what/how you eat is critical for long term success.

You'd have to choose to do it.

WLS 2/26 good luck :)

i'm sure you will follow all the "rules" that go along with the sleeve concerning moderation, drinking, et al. follow these rules until you reach your wonderful goal

after goal is the concern-gaining weight back

If you choose the "behavior" you choose the "consequences" Dr. Phil (love him :) )

IMO - as long as you continue with all your good choices, new lifestyle - your "consequences" - will be a continued wonderful, healthy, weight, lifestyle

your consequences will be different only "if" you choose not to follow the rules (could be easier said than done) but this is what we're all striving for, continueing our way of life that we started the DOS

no one wants to have gone through this major life saving surgery - only to repeat their/my past mistakes

now, concentrate on being successful on your path with the sleeve, today, tomorrow and always

only worry about tomorrow if today is failing (not sure if that makes sense :o ) oh well :(

good luck

There's WAY more to that story. You should not state stuff so matter-of-factly if you do not have all the information.

I agree. There is more to the story. But my thought is there might have been a true 5-6lb gain. The rest is likely retained Water & possibly a wardrobe difference. But then again I'm just speculating. Heck, it might have been 2 different scales with one out of calibration.

From what my Dr. has said several times, carbonation is the kiss of death for the sleeve. You can expand your stomach way to much if you continue carbonated drinks. 12 ounces of a carbonated beverage is equivalent to putting 48 oz. in there.

Um, I really don't know how to respond to this nicely and still get my point across, so here goes.

There is no way in hell tgat 12oz of carbonated beverage equates to anything near 48oz. If that were the case, there would be more exploded sleeve stories than you can imagine.

Secondly, the sleeve is nearly impossible to stretch out, tgat portion of your stomach has been removed.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
