I know it was discussed before but I can't find the posting. Why can't I continue to take Nexium?

I'm on omeprazole and have to take one each day like I did before surgery. I know it is the generic equivalent for one of them...

I'm at three years and continue to take a Prilosec every day. If I miss just one, I have unbearable acid reflux.

Nexium is a PPI, proton pump inhibitor. We are to take it to reduce stomach acid so our incisions heal. One study has shown risk of bone fractures for people who have taken it long term.

Not sure about taking it with the sleeve as I'm on dissolvable prevacid. But if you do some research on nexium and some of the things people have gone through while on it, sounds like a terrible drug. I was on it for a few months preop and had to stop. I was having terrible heart palpitations and anxiety. Once I got off they stopped. Thankfully the prevacid Is working for me currently. I do not want to end up back on that stuff. Those were the worst months of my life.

I am on Nexium and have no side effects. It's been fantastic for me. Spoke to my surgeon about it today and he said to stay on it if it helps.

Same what I was told AussieLady. I've been on it for so long, at least 8 years. I read where some ppl never had it again after surgery, lucky ducks!

In another couple of weeks I am going to start cutting back and only take it when I am getting reflux. Nexium is great that way, it will kick in quickly if you need it to, you don't have to have it every day for it to work.

Aussie, isn't the point of ppis to prevent acid and problems associated with acid, ie erosion, barretts etc? Why would you wait to take it until you get reflux? Seems kinda counterintuitive. Because of the possibility of bone fractures?

I'm just asking not trying to be a jerk.

Until you actually stop taking it you don't know whether you are having reflux. And whilst reflux can become worse for some it actually goes away for others. I want to see whether the surgery has helped my reflux. Also, if I don't need it every day, why take it every day? I'm just one of those people who believes you only take medication if you need it. I want to find out where I am at.

That makes a lot of sense! Thanks.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
