No Caffiene!?

Recommended Posts

Caffiene, it's so ingrained in the culture where I live. coffee, espresso, it's everywhere, I've been consuming it my entire adult life and I can't imagine functioning without it  . I am probably just as addicted to it as I am to food. -_- *rimshot*

Skipping my morning latte, coffee, or black tea creates nasty results for my body. I'm haggard, not with it, not alert, I'm less creative, and I have to drag my ass through the day. While

, it is a diuretic which I'm aware is bad for sleevers who need their Water and hydration.

I am being sleeved on March 14th 2013, and my surgeon prescribed that I wean myself off caffiene. I managed to get off lattes, all that milk was no doubt making me fat, I got down to coffee with a splash of cream, now I'm down to one black tea with a splash of low fat milk. I'm handling the reduction of calories better than I thought I would! But the less caffiene in the tea has been rough.

I've quit caffiene before and it's bad, the intense headaches, even Migraines, the irritability, the tiredness... Maybe it's the addict talking in me, but am I to never enjoy caffiene again? Is it that bad a diuretic?

How do you guys get your butts in gear and find yourself bright eyed and bushy tailed at 9am and ready to blurt out ideas at the conference table? I hear that Vitamin B12 supplements give an energy boost, I'd like to hear your eperiences, is it anything to write home about?

Do any of you sleevers end up returning to caffiene after several months post-op?

Many thanks!

---------- Bree

Bree,

I also am a HUGE caffine a-holic. My biggest sin is cold black tea. All day long. My mother fed me iced tea in my baby bottle...so I kinda blame her...The other reason they say get away from coffee is because for some, it can be a hunger stimulant. Personally, I find quite the opposite to be true. Give me a tripple shot mocha and I'm good without food for at least 8 hours. There are many of us that have turned back to the sins of caffine. I have not gotten back into my mocha a day habit because like you, I feel the calories from those made me fat to begin with, but I am back to drinking black tea like it's going out of style. Some people like crystal light, others do mio...I do Lipton Brisk Tea. Another big thing about the coffees and teas for some people is the milk and sweeteners they add. personally I've never been a sweet tea person so I am thankful for that. Another reason he may be trying to get you away from the coffee is the acidity can upset the incision while you are healing. I didn't really believe the acidity hype until I had a fresh squeezed limeade and my stomach burned and curtled when I was a little more than 4 weeks out. I am still very cautious with citrus. So the real answer is that no, you will not be caffine free forever probably, and you don't really have to be, but just be aware of the effects caffine has on you, and what else you are consuming with it, and you should be fine ;)

I used to be a HUGE soda drinker (HA! Literally I was huge, I crack myself up) :) Anyhow, I quite caffeine 12.26.11 and I am fine. I am still brilliant (depends on who is judging) and I can function in the morning. I don't trust myself to go back to soda. I will not take one sip! My husband thinks that this is a bit extreme, but I love where I am now. I love how I feel and look. Soda is one of those items that I think I will keep locked up in Pandora's box. With that being said, I have heard of people drinking coffee and diet soda after the sleeve. Am I personally recommending it?! No. I agree with the above poster that said that caffeine is hard on the tummy. I think my surgeon said that it can increase the possibility of ulcers.

Best of luck with weaning off the caffeine. You can do it!

I hear ye. I was a coffee fiend! Thought that I'd never do this sleeve because I couldn't have coffee or wine. I am astounded to say after 4 days without it, I didn't miss it. (the coffee) I'm down to one glass of wine a week and am to be sleeved on Feb 13th. I can't believe how one wine hits me now! Kind of cool:] Hang in. The DT's fade and after a week it won't have the pull it does on you now. Just wait and see! Once you're sleeping well and hydrated it won't seem like such a big deal. I promise:]

Ticker is not working. Down 15.

Fat makes us sluggish and tired -- caffeine helps offset that. But without the fat (or just less of it), we'll feel more energized! Also -- have you started B12? That should give you an energy boost!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
