Anyone do a pre-op diet before your told to?

I still have to go through 5 more months of weigh ins, but I was thinking of trying the pre-op diet just to get myself mentally ready. Anyone try it before they had to? Did you lose weight? How much?

I jumped the gun just a couple of days early....once I found out my surgery date. I lost about 15-16 pounds in 2+ weeks. My Dr only required a 10 day pre-op diet.

I started substituting the EAS low carb shakes for Breakfast and lunch about 2 weeks before I was officailly told to start my pre-op diet. I did it to ease myself into the habit of being on a liquid diet. I was only required to be on a full liquid diet for 7 days pre-op.

We were told to do 800-1000 calories - 80 grams of Protein and under 75 grams of carbs during the six month supervised diet. I lost 10 pounds a month during this time.

I signed up for fitness pal and used that to chart my food and actually learn how much Protein & carbs I were getting. I used it faithfully!

I drank 64 ounce of Water. I did my best. I weaned down on my caffeine, got rid of diet soda's, got rid of caffeine before surgery. I did treat myself.

Exercising. I was too big to use the Gazelle or walk around the neighborhood. I had a hard time getting up the stairs by myself.

I walked in place for like 5 minutes at a time. I then lost enough to get on the gazelle. I was able to handle 5 minutes at a time on the gazelle and eventually was able to get to an hour at a time.

I took the entire process extremely seriously. I have heard of people gaining weight during the six month process, why not work hard during this time and start changing your life now!

ps - since I never ate Breakfast, I started a 100% whey Protein shake for breakfast daily!

Wow that's awesome! My doc never told me to diet.. He just said to come in for 6 consecutive months of weigh-ins. I use my fitness pal too.

I'm pre-op and don't have a date yet, but I'm experimenting with the pre-op diet or "crash diet" on my own just to gain some perspective on what I'll have to do when my time comes. I started on Wed 1/16/13 @ 312lbs and this morning I'm @ 303lbs, so a 9lb loss I'll take that on any given day. My surgery goal wt my dr wants me @ is 290lbs, I'll need to lose another 13lbs. I also workout 4-5days a week, I've been reading a lot on here that exercise helps a lot with recovery, so I'm trying to minimize any complications as much as I can, but won't know until I'm wheeled out of the OR. Congrats, you're so inspirational. I've been trying to break the 300lb mark since the 3rd of this month. I've been using the 1200 cal plan my nut gave me and on 1/16-1/22 (312lbs-303lbs) I've been experimenting with a "crash diet" I found on youtube and lost 9lbs. So super juiced about that. After today I'm going to start back on my 1200 cal a day plan again.

I had to do a 3 month supervised diet. I followed their instructions. Low carb/high Protein. I lost a little weight, my 3 months went through thanksgiving and Christmas. Yikes! I also broke my leg on January 2( 5lb cast) and had to weigh in January 9th. I was freaking out because of the holiday noshing and the cast. I actually lost 5lbs in addition to the cast! I was totally relieved. I had to show a loss. As long as I was showing a loss, they were happy. Whether it was 2 pounds or 10 pounds. It shows the surgeon and the insurance company you are committed to making the necessary lifestyle changes to make this surgery successful. That's why the make you do it.

I was warned not to go below the 35 bmi until I was approved, but I didn't think that was going to be likely anyway, lol! Now, that I am approved. I have decided to do a kidney and liver detox and start eating smaller portions, to get my "brain" ready for less food.

If you're not used to eating Soups and purées as well as drinking Protein shakes, I'd suggest you try and incorporate some of those things during this time. It'll make it easier for you to transition into your pre-op and not be such a struggle. Understand, that it will be a while before you'll be able to eat "regular" food after surgery, so don't be in a rush to go kamikaze! Slowly transition. You'll still lose weight and I promise it'll be easier to transition by the time of your pre-op!

Purées make me nervous. I'm a texture freak, and unless its mashed potatoes or pudding, it shouldn't be that consistency! Lol do you mean like baby food purée? I'd rather do straight liquid

Yes, that's the gist. Puréed cauliflower, potatoes, squash, apple sauce, etc! Be careful about all liquids( calories add up). You can do Soups, as well, Tomato, squash, etc. Just add some veg protein( no flavor) and boost up your Protein.< /p>

I'm sorry, I thought you meant the pre-op liquid diet. My insurance, or surgical team, not sure which, did not require the supervised diet for months leading up to the surgery. Like most on here, I had already tried it for 15-20 years with back and forth success.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
