Protien Shakes/Powders

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I am posting again since no one is really answering in a different category....

I am just starting this journey of getting approved for WLS, but I have been reading that a lot of people advise to get lots of samples of protien shakes before hand to see what you like. Can anyone tell me what is a good way to go about getting samples? Can you just buy individual pakets of protien powder, or one single shake? Can any one recommend a good tasting shake? Any additional info would be great as well :)

Thanks!

My surgeon recommends Chike, so that's what I've been using. You can order a variety pack of single serve packets directly from their website. http://www.chikenutrition.com/buy-chike.html

I just ordered a sample pack from Unjury. I hear that they taste pretty good. My pre op diet starts feb 11.

You can also order sample packs of Syntrax nectar BJs Bariatrics. You get to choose 11 different flavors for 14.99.

They are my favorites -- especially chocolate Truffle and vanilla Bean Torte...

You can also order samples from unjury.

Definitely try all the samples you can before surgery to see if they'll work for you and if you find you can't deal with the powders, there are other options.

I tried all the different flavors from nectar and unjury and the whey scent was so overpowering that there were only three that didn't make me gag and nearly vomit, and those three still left me a little nauseated. There was absolutely NO WAY I was going to be able to drink 32oz every day. I went in to see my dietician to see if there were other options and she suggested that I try the Premier Protein shakes and I have been living on those post-op. They taste just like chocolate milk and are easy to get down.

You can order samples of everything Vita Lady carries. (Vitalady.com). That apple one from nectar sounded good to me, but it was awful. Glad I just got a sample. So far I've only liked a few.

I would recommend googling "protein sample packs" that should give you a variety to pick from.

I personally chose Syntrax nectar&sweets and I ended up loving several of them.

For me, it has boiled down to cost and convenience. I am currently not picky so premier from costco fits thst description. I also want a guzzle and go shake. I do not want to get caught up in mixing, adding, enjoying, etc another food that i can end up putting my focus on like the old me rather than exercise and other parts of life I have missed out on because of the hyper focus on food and when I will get my next bite. Also...my costco currently has muscle milk and Protein isolate powder on sale. I dont know if that is all of them or not, but the coupons are in their flyer.

advocare has a great berry tasting Meal Replacement shake. It has 24 grams Protein in it. I was introduced to it at a bariatric weight loss surgery monthly meeting that was on protein. Our Dr's office had nutritionist have the meeting for patients. They have other flavors to. You can get in single serve packages it is like 14 in a box.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
