Frustrated Newbie--HOW DO I KNOW when I'm full?!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I had my surg with Dr. Aceves on 1/5. Currently 15 days out. Had a hiatal hernia repaired, but healed up just fine. Down 12 pounds so far. I just had a few questions because I'm pretty frustrated and feel that I had to re-learn everything about how to eat.

I keep hearing a few things:

-Eat slowly

-dont overeat your sleeve

-listen to your body

Here's the thing--I'm still clueless. I eat (drink, mostly at this point) slowly, but dont feel a restriction. What does it feel like? At this point, I can only tell when it's up near my throat (liquid)--in which case I know I've drank too fast. I measure and time with my liquids, but I have been hungry a few times in the last week and drank fast only to find that 15 m later I have the foamies.

I want to do this right, but I am having such a hard time understanding my body's signs. I feel like I'm not doing well enough on liquids, and that I need to figure this out before I get to mushies or solids. I don't want to stretch my sleeve, but this is so strange and new still.

Another example: I just ate about 3 oz of yogurt for the first time and I feel like I have yogurt up to throat. I don't think I overate, but...did I eat too fast (15 min)? Is this bad? Should I have eaten less? If so, when would I keep going? I am even using tiny baby spoons and yeah...not sure if it's helping.

Sorry, all. I just don't know what the signs are. In the past, I was full when I felt full. Does the "New Full"=the feeling you get when you aren't hungry?

Thanks for all the advice ahead of time!

I'm just a little ahead of you, and I went through all of the same gross foamies, only mine were more like slimes. I thought I was eating slow enough, but what I've discovered moving from mushy to soft foods is that I really need a good 3-5 min in between EVERY bite, and the bites need to be about the size of a nickel. The slower I go, the less I spit up. By comparison, 3oz of yogurt takes me at least 30 min to eat without sliming.

Try slowing down even more and see if that alleviates some of the side effects. If you give your body time to make sure it's fully in your pouch, it will be easier to tell when you're done b/c as soon as you feel the feeling in your throat, you'll know. You're feeling it now I think b/c you aren't giving it enough time to fully get down there before taking the next bite.

Hope it gets better!

It's really hard, isn't it? I feel like eating slowly is just hard, when something tastes good and there's a fair amount of head hunger (I hate that term). If I were to take 3 min in between bites it would take forever! I can still do it though. Is this how long you wait in between bites, even this far into your recovery? Or can you eventually eat faster? It would make sense if it was just slow, always.

I just started on soft food yesterday, Day 22. Yesterday was ok, I think i just played it safe and didn't portion too big. I concentrated on chewing well (30 times) per bite. I paced myself but nothing like waiting between bites. Everything seemed fine. I was comfortably full with each meal.

Today however, I went out to watch football, and ordered some tilapia and well steamed veggies. When the food came I immediately boxed up half of it and ate the rest. I felt over-full but not really uncomfortable. Tonight for dinner, I took what i thought were small portions. Had some turkey meatloaf and mashed potatoes and even when I felt full, there were a few bites left.

The difference between feeling full and those next few bites.. is horrible! I ate them and when I was done I felt MISERABLE! I tried to walk around a bit then went to the bathroom where most of it came back up!

I need to get my head around pushing the plate away when I first feel full, because I don't want too many repeats of tonight's episode.

It is much, much easier to tell once you move to solid foods. The solid foods sit so much heavier in your stomach.

If you are getting the feeling that food is coming up in your throat, you have had too much. Next time, cut back a little bit.

Don't worry about stretching things out right now. It isn't going to happen on liquids and soft foods.

That miserable feeling that KevLev mentioned when you have had too much is something you won't want to do to yourself. It is a very quick learning curve. More than once, I ate too quickly or tried to get down another bite, and I ended up in the bathroom. If I bent over, the food would come up with no effort. You will learn to make quick adjustments, and it won't happen too often.

when you move to solids you will know, trust me, you will know....I felt the same when I was on pureeds, and my NUT told me to just wait until I move to soft solids...and when I felt it I was pleasantly surprised...

Now everyone has a different full signal, from pain in the shoulder to like me, you just feel uncomfortable if you take another bite.....I have spat up before, mainly because I wasnt paying attention to eating and I was shoveing food in my mouth and talking...that was a lesson learned....

you will know when you are full...

Yeah, I think the best tip is what Brookie said.

Plan to eat at a ridiculously slow pace - and then eat slower!

Cutlery down, talk between bites.

Plus your tummy is still in trauma. All those things your looking for will take a while.

All the best,

Deano

Thanks so much for all the advice, everyone. It's really hard to eat slow but it sounds like the continues to be the only way to prevent overeating the sleeve. Hopefully like some of you, I'll feel the restriction much more when im in mushies or solids.

Thanks all!

Weigh and/or measure your food. I am 2 yrs 7 months out and I still do this and also keep an on line food log. When you aren't hungry it's very difficult to know when you're full!! Being uncomfortable can sneak up on you very quickly!!! I still don't experience 'hunger' - not like before, my new hunger is an empty feeling. Something I can definitely ignore if I choose to.

3 oz of yogurt is a LOT of yogurt so early out. I'd say about triple what you should try and eat at one time. Take it easy, eat 'UNDER' your sleeve.

This is totally normal at this stage. My nut told me that it should take you no longer than 20 mins to eat something, as soon as you get to 20 mins whatever is left should be put away.

As you get on to solid foods the feeling of restriction becomes easier to determine and the stuck/full to the top of your throat feeling subsides, you feel it in your stomach like you did before your op. everything just takes time to heal and get back to 'normal'

When you get on to solids just remember the 20 rule, chew everything 20 times at least, wait 20 secs between bites, and anything left after 20 mins should be pushed away.

Hope this helps. XXxxx

I get this horrible, embarrassingly loud gurgling....which has now prompted my husband to say "whelp..guess you're done". lol and sad to say....I actually have to have him "burp" me sometimes. I still have pain when eating/swallowing food at times and have to have him help me burp by rubbing my back. Feels good actually.... But my throat feels like its closing. and yeah...thats my "dinners over" sign. :)

I counted bites. It's the only way I could figure it out. I find I can take six bites, very well chewed, before it starts feeling like its coming up my throat. Sometimes that's still one bite too many, but at least it gives me an idea of what I can eat.

Eta: I get that gurgling noise too, my kids laugh but it's a little embarrassing.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
