Alcohol and 2 weeks post op!

Recommended Posts

Well, I asked the hubbie what he thought and he just said (he's a phd chemist) that alcohol is a pretty strong acid and will hinder the healing of the cut down your stomach. We both think you'll be fine though. So if alcohol is an acid, so is coffee which I was going to have one tomorrow. Now I'm kind of thinking I should just wait a little.

Everyone keeps mentioning liver but it's the gallbladder that we lose from losing too much weight too fast, it can't cope with all of the fats (or something-I don't know the processes involved). Since alcohol is fat soluable, I'd think that it will also be hard on our gall bladders while we loose weight. I know I'll have something every now and then during this process but I don't want to loose my gallbladder. That makes for a permanent careful diet from what my buddie at work told me, he can't have coffee etc and not supposed to drink (poopy!)

BTW, to whomever said alcohol is a stimulant, it's a depressant (and not good to have if you're already clinically depressed) but you're right, it interacts with lots of meds.I hope people just get information from this discussion, it's too bad so many are so heated up.

mkardh is right. Not only does it thin your blood but alcohol is a irritant. Your stomach still has a fresh suture line and drinking alcoholl can cause impaired healing and irritation. Imagine if you will, pouring alcohol on a open wound. YOUCH! :)

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
