The problem with straws that they recommend not using them right after surgery is because when you suck through a straw you tend to also bring more air into your stomach, obviously right after surgery you already have to much air in there and you don't want to make it worse. Therefore I think that as long as your not having gas pains anymore you would probably be ok with a straw, I would start slow try it once and see what happens, as far as I know you won't damage anything by using a straw just possibly cause yourself some increased pain. Hope this helps, good luck.

I was told not to use straws due to the fact that it might increase the air in your sleeve and expand it as well as it allows you to drink more at one time which might also expand your sleeve....oh yea drinking to much at once hurts like hell!

There is a great search feature on this forum and it will provide a lot of information on the pros/cons of using a straw. Good luck! :)

I dont know how I was taught to drink... but when I drink from a glass or cup or a sippy, my mouth tends to grab air... when I drink from a straw its as if my lifs suction to it...so for me, a straw works... and its the only way for me to get in my liquids most days....

My Dr was against it at first but Ive had no problems with gas & have been making my Water minimums so he said OK

My doc said it would be fine to use a straw at 2 weeks out. Helped me a lot with getting liquid in.

I'm 2 weeks out , would it be ok to use a straw now?

I can't remember how long I was suppose to wait to use a straw, but it is the one thing I did that I wasn't suppose to. It never made me uncomfortable, extra air...nothing like that. I started using a straw at two weeks to the day.....I was able to get in a lot more fluids with a straw.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
