Hi All,

I know the doctors insist on a minimum of 2 weeks off from work. I was wondering what your experiences are. Do you really need that much time to recover? What's the soonest I could be functional again.

Thanks

I was told I could go straight back to work after 3 days. I work as a graphic designer though, no major physical stuff. From what I've heard, people are feeling well in just a few days. I'm happy to take more time off if necessary, hopefully I won't be feeling sick thoough (I like my job).

Wow, My doctor said 4 weeks! I know some are able to get back to work before this but he really advises to at least arrange for 4 weeks. I would like to hear from post op sleevers on this.

I was back at work after 7 days off. I didn't have a very easy recovery. I had lots of gas pains for days. But, from reading other posts on here, there are many people that had an easy recovery and at least one poster said he was back at work after 3 days. So I guess it all depends on your surgeon and your ability to recover. If your job is like mine (a desk job requiring no heavy lifting) then you could go back to work sooner than someone that has to stoop, bend and lift all day. My motto is: Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

I just got my FMLA/disability paperwork back from my docs office and it says I am to return to work 2/11!!! My surgery is Monday 1/14. They put down 4 weeks just in case of any issues but will clear me to go back sooner at my post-op appointment after 2 weeks if I'm able. I'm an admin assistant at a law office-- They said it's easier to have the initial paperwork be worst case rather than say 2 weeks and need more time. I understand that! Plus I just found out that I have to go home with a drain.... boo. Not happy about that... Now I get to research that experience.

I was back after a week and I have an active job. It was hard the first week back but I did fine. I was tired but not too sore. My doctor cleared me for work the day after I came home from the hospital in reality, so 3 days off would have been all I had to take off. They encouraged me to get back to my normal life ASAP.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
