Food Porn's Gotta Go!

Recommended Posts

Probaby got your attention just by using the word 'porn' on here, heh heh...but I call food related tv - food porn! And it's gotta go in 2013, cause it's not doing me any favors.

But really. As I enter the pre-op weight loss phase, I realize there's no easier way to trigger a raging case of head hunger than to watch the food network, cooking channel, etc. Here in Boston we also have a show called the Phantom Gourmet and it airs for like 2 hours on BOTH Sat & Sun mornings, and shows you anywhere and everywhere to find the most awful food!! (And by 'awful', I mean ridiculously wonderful.)

While I'm a self-admitted foodie, (surprised?) and I enjoy finding new healthy recipes: Do I really need to tune in to find out where to get a sandwich that boasts a full pound of bacon?...Or a burger that's coated in beer batter, stuffed with mac n' cheese, and deep fried to perfection?? No.

I'm really trying to focus in on my pre-op diet, because my doctor requires patients to lose 5% of our body weight before she'll even offer a surgical date. And so....the conclusion to this rant is, that food porn's gotta go. It's one of many head hunger triggers, and serves no purpose other than to show me how to make my own deep fried butter!

Anyone else think the food porn thing is a slippery slope? Or, even a mild form of torture? lol. :P

LOL. When my husband is eating dinner (usually at a restaurant), I call watching him eat "food porn". We were on vacation last week and he was eating a cheeseburger (one of my biggest weaknesses) and I was watching him eat every juicy bite. I started singing bow chicka bow wow (porn music). He just play tormented me for a minute by being very obscene, but it was a good belly laugh!

I still enjoy the food porn, personally. While I'm not eating it, I can still enjoy it mentally. I have a lifetime of knowing what all those things taste like, and surgery didn't make me hate food. I find that I now get a lot of enjoyment out of how something smells, even if I have no plan to eat it (*cough* CHOCOLATE). If it's a trigger, then yeah, it's good to steer away. But post op, I find that because my diet is so relatively bland (turkey, chicken, fish, veggie, dairy) I enjoy the idea of these things that I won't eat. I still enjoy a well constructed and presented meal.

OMG that is what I called it too .... hahaha I swear pre op that is all I watched and now at 4 months out I still watch it all the time, sometimes it triggers me to want something I cant , well not cant , shouldnt have ... yes I have found that I can eat anything, but I have to choose not too.... so for some reason food "porn" helps me with not eating it now most of the times....

Ironically, out of 8 TV screens at my gym one is on the food network and of course I'm always watching that one! I laugh at myself because I feel like the donkey that has a carrot dangling in front of it! Food porn is my carrot ;)

Doesn't bother me, I find that I watch the food/cooking shows now more than Pre surgery. I guess that automatic trigger, that gag/fullness feeling in my head is a constant reminder.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
