I have my list of Vitamins and supplements I need to take but need help with the timing or when to not to take one with the other. My thyroid has been removed so take Synthroid. It cannot be taken with citrus or with Calcium and must be taken on an empty stomach and not eat for 2 hours. I actually take it at about 2 AM when I get up to use the bathroom during the night so it is not really an issue. I "think" I read on here somewhere, but can't find it now, that calcium and Iron should not be taken together. Do I have that correct?? Are there others that need to be taken separately?? I'm taking all the usual ones such as multi, B12, calcium, Biotin, iron, and D. If I'm correct about the calcium and iron, is it because they are chemically incompatible, hard on the liver, hard on the stomach or what? Are they less effective or is it ajust a preference? Thanks for your help. MGT

Allow two hours between the Calcium and Iron. It is an absorption issue, not a matter of preference.

Thanks for alerting me to the Synthroid/calcium situation. I will have to rethink my medication schedule.

I'm going to have to think about the same thing (seeing that I am also on Synthroid). If you come up with a plan I'd love to hear it!

I'm going to work on it tomorrow when I divvy up all my meds for next week. I'll post it when I have it mapped out. I really have to have a schedule hanging in front of me to keep up with it!

I've actually been on Synthroid/Levothyroxine for several years and 2 different doctors during that time would keep adjusting my dosage up and down according to various blood tests. Until I went to an endocrinologist, who had to remove my thyroid, I'd never heard about calcium and citrus juice/fruit having effects on the meds! Yes.. the thyroid was not performing effectively, but I also never knew to NOT take the meds alone. I am learning very swiftly, after going through this WLS journey to question my doctors more and to do my own research.

Here’s my plan for getting in all my meds and supplements. I plan to remove several of these down the road, but for now, this is my plan. Input is appreciated.

2-4 AM Levothyroxine (thyroid meds prescription) This works for me because I ALWAYS have to use the restroom after midnight.

6 AM or rising

1 multi

2 calcium

Prescription meds for hypertension

D with D3

Biotin

Zinc

D2 – Sunday only prescription

8-9 AM

B12 sublingual

B complex

Folic acid

5-6 PM

1 multi

2 calcium

9-10 PM – Iron - VitronC

don't take more than 500 mg of Calcium at once because we can only absorb 500 mg at a time. Take calcium citrate not calcium carbonate. Don't take calcium within 2 hours of your PPI or acid reducer. Also separate calcium and Iron by 2 hours.

That's all I can think of right now!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
