Considering band, but being pushed for the bypass

Recommended Posts

I watched my daughter go through Gastric Bypass earlier this year. The recovery was hard. She has lost alot of weight in fact now they are wondering if she will be able to stop. She suffers all the time from malnutrition. Half of her hair fell out but is coming back. She went from a size 18 to a size 2 in 6 months and is still falling. She is only thirty five but has tons of baggy skin hanging off her stomach because she lost the weight so fast. She told me she wishes that she had known about the band. Please, please, research before you decide on GBP.

Seems to me that a big part of the change for me will be in pushing away from the TV and computer, where I usually eat nonstop. I keep trying to envision what my life will be like, and what I will be filling those particular times with..... Anybody have any encouraging thoughts?

MomX03, I have three children and a demanding job. I could not afford to have alot of down time and didn't think I wanted to alter my anatomy forever. Here is a study that helped me make my decision. Research and then make the decision that is best for you. Good luck!

I was the ultimate carb addict! :success1: bread, Pasta, rice, pastries, crackers, but especially sweets. Sugar is deadly to me. Since being banded in July, I've lost my love for bread, pastries, and most pastas. I find that if I do want Pasta, that I'm satisfied with only a little bit of whole grain pasta. I find any carb that's made with starch just makes me sick. I still eat crackers, but only wholegrain, and I just don't feel the urge to eat them like I used to.

I would not recommend the gastric bypass. It's just way too dangerous and has too many complications as well as being irreversable. :phanvan At least with the band, if you choose, you can tighten or loosen it, or eventually take it off.

The one thing that I like about the band is that you are told to eat smaller amounts on a more frequent basis, so it's good for snackers. :biggrin1: I used to eat one big meal a day and then snack off and on. I can't do that anymore, but it's really teaching me how to eat more healthy.

I started off at 5'6, 315 :faint: and am now at 265 as of today. Although revamping your lifestyle seems scary, I believe it's gonna change my life. Good luck with your decision.:)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
