Is Walking Enough?

Is walking alone enough to assist in the weight loss process and to keep toned?

Knee and elbow problems keep me from doing any rigorous exercise and I hesitate to join Curves, etc. because of my limitations.

Does anyone JUST walk and have success?

Yes yes yes yes yes walking works. I was my happiest and losing my weight the quickest when I was walking 3 miles a day. Woohooo gotta get back to it.

I go to curves and skip 4 of the machines because of my back and knees.

I don't walk as much as I should but I do do curves. I have for the ast 2 weeks gone 4 and 5 days. On my off days I just go on the boards that they have and jog in place and move my arms. It gets me out of the house and I feel accountable to the people there.

I have only heard wonderful things about walking so if that is all you can do go for it and you will have great success. I just don't want you to think you can't go to curves if you can't use all of the machines.

Hey Ginger, hang in there. Walking is a really good start.

The more you do, and lose, the more you will feel like doing,

don"t get discouraged.

When I began my journey fifteen months ago, I couldn't walk

a block without stopping and my knees screaming at me.

For the first eight months, thats all I did, just a little walking,

maybe a mile three times a week. Now that I have reached my

goal, I feel better than I have in years. I walk still three times

a week about two miles, bike, and now play adult soccer.

You will get there! Be patient grasshopper. I did....

Fifteen months post op, 200 pounds lost, Starting BMI of 54,

now 24. 70 inches total gone, and I'm high on life.:clap2:

Walking is great exercise.

Contrary to popular opinion: You can not target fat on your body. It does not matter which muslces you exercise as far a weight loss and fat reduction is concerned. Have you ever noticed that the Olympic track stars have toned arms? No flab!

Is walking alone enough to assist in the weight loss process and to keep toned?

Walking with a friend is better than walking alone. :)

I walk for my exercise. I am not into anything else as far as exercise goes. In fact, I just finished my walk.

Shawn...obviously walking is working for you, based on your total weight loss. Way to go!!

Do you find you are getting toned with just walking, ie. no flabby arms, belly, etc.?

I haven't done anything but walk yet because arthritis and just plain ol' being heavy and outta shape.....but I'm proud to be able to walk a mile now!! I keep reading that strength training is important but maybe I can talk myself into some of that later when I get over feeling like an alien at the gym.

I feel that I am toned. Although, I do have looser skin than I like. Whether you end up w/flabby skin depends upon your genetics, how much weight you've lost, and possibly how fast.

Muscle toned...skin alright!

I think walking is a good start but really isn't enough, you just don't burn many calories walking. Jogging, lifting weights, swimming, more active stuff works better, or the elliptical is better too. It's a good start though.

I think its a great start. My DH and I have a great routine going where he walks with Eliza in the jogger and I jog beside him. Because he's bigger and taller than me he can walk much faster, I simply cant keep up with him. So he's walking at the same speed I'm running, lol. Which goes to show that if you really put the effort into walking (not just strolling) you can really get a workout - he wore the heart rate monitor the other night and was up at around 155 and we did 8km in under an hour - that's 5 miles.

However, I'm the one jogging - and for me proportionally its more work than he's doing - because I"m smaller, less muscular and female. I've surpassed walking now, even though I've gotten much much fitter over the past year, my maximum walking pace has not increased, physiologically, I simply cannot do more than about 6.5 kms per hour or my gait starts to suffer and I hurt my back. I have to break into a run at that point. Now, walking full pelt at my absolute fastest, I cant get my heart rate above about 130, which for me is not even a workout. I can workout comfortably now in the 160's, as I'm used to running.

BUT - I didnt start out that way. I started slowly and just increased slowly and steadily. I had really bad ankle problems, it would have been dead easy to say "oh, I cant run" and never feel I had to but over time, the running has greatly increased the strength I have in that leg and rebalanced it with my other leg, and plenty of stretching has increased the range of motion - so a high impact, injury prone sport like running has actually improved the musculoskeletal problems I had.

I walk for an hour about 4 times a week...and have been loosing on average about 3.3 lb a week. However, over winter I stopped walking (due to weather...and i admit procrastination!) and guess what? .... I stopped loosing weight...for six months I stayed stagnant...now I have started walking again low and behold the weight is comming off as before.

Walking is fabulous. Especially if you have never been particularly active.

I have also found that FOR ME - the Eliptical machine is even better because it is a pretty much zero impact exercise - it's like treading Water, or a slow jog without the pounding. Burns LOTS of calories but causes NO damage.

My first time on the eliptical was only 2 minutes. I then worked up to 5, and then ten, etc.

Now, about 9 months later, I can go 30 minutes and my knees have improved dramatically.

For back pain - you have to do abdominals - crunches, machines, whatever. It sucks - but it works.

I've been walking 2.5 - 3.5 miles 4x week. I'm enjoyed a steady weight decline and benefitting greatly from having been banded. Before surgery, walking to the mailbox was a chore. I'm planning on staying with walking, varying pace and distance as necessary to keep from straining the feet, ankles, knees, hips and lower back. I highly recommend starting with walking. Get a digital pedometer to gauge how far and fast you're going and what the calorie burn is. It's a great motivator.

Regular leisure walking is not enough. Walking briskly and in intervals of fast, slow, intermediate pace is good and will be very beneficial to your health, as well as aid you in weightloss. If you do join a gym, I suggest the Elliptical (low impact on the knees) but you are able to have an actual "cardio" workout on it without killing your joints.

Swimming - low to no impact on the knees and very therapeutic

      Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

        I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

        I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.
