Pre-op clear liquids-- are Lollipops allowed?

Recommended Posts

Trying to figure out if I can suck on a lollipop during my pre-op surgery clear liquid diet? My surgery tomorrow morning.....

I really don't think so... lollipops are pure sugar.

Thanks everyone! So I guess no lollipops! Of course, I know they are pure sugar but I was not concerned about that ( at least not at that moment). I wasn't thinking specifically about WLS --- I was thinking of pre surgery fasting in general. If a pre-op patient is allowed Jello they'd probably pick regular Jello -- not sugar free. My thinking was that if a person is allowed regular jello I would think that a lollipop would be ok. Both have a ton of sugar.

I've been doing Clear liquids since 8pm last night....just tired of broth and sugar free jello.... my husband has a stash of lollipops ( he sucks on them all the time!) and I came across it while cleaning....

Thanks again!

I had to take Cipro 2 weeks ago for a severe UTI and it was making me sick and vomit. Around this time, I advanced from liquid to soft so it didn't dawn on me that it was the Cipro until I missed a dose for surgery. Well, when I would vomit, I would get that terrible pill bitterness and I would suck on a See's miniature lollipop and it was the only thing that would get the bitter taste to go away and settle my stomach. Of course I only had one and not the whole box like I would have in the past!!! The vanilla pops were the best at settling my tummy!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
