First Day Pre-op diet...what did you do?

Recommended Posts

Hi All:

I started my liquid diet today. .I only have to do a week...as my revision surgery from lapband to vsg is Dec. 20th. Anywho, just wanted to get feedback on what or how you maintained your focus while on the diet. Right now I am at work and my stomach is growling big time..

Of course everyone here is talking about food and holiday parties..cocktail recipes..I just want to get out of here. ..maybe if I go shopping on lunch that would help...any suggestions...? Please

The thing that helped me most was focusing on why I was putting myself through the misery of two weeks with no "real" food. My surgeon was adamant that if they couldn't have clear/easy access to the stomach there would be no surgery and after a lifetime of being fat, there was no way I was going to do anything to risk it. If you're hungry, have something you're allowed to drink, like a shake. The first couple days are the worst, but the longer you do it and stick with it, the easier it's going to get.

If you're not already exercising, use the lunch time as get away and walk time.

I started on a Saturday so i could have the day to myself and not have to worry about being distracted and hearing all the food talk. I went shopping, then came home, did some stuff around the house, did some reading and got myself buried in a project. If I was hungry, I had some Soup or I drank some Water or ate some Jello. You're not supposed to starve, so have a shake, some soup, put something in your tummy!

I'm on day 11 of 800 calories a day ( two shakes, a piece of fish/chicken, a salad of unlimited greens and cucumbers and up to a cup of other fresh chopped veggies, half of a piece of fruit (except banana) and one ounce of nuts or two eggs) This will continue to be my diet for the next 78 days, and then I start my actual pre-op diet. I work in a convenience store with food all around me. I have to stock chips and sodas, prepare sandwiches, hotdogs, sausages and my FAVORITE fried chicken all. day. long..... except when I'm at the register staring down the peanut chews, slim jims and Peanut Butter cups that are sitting right there on the counter next to me. It ain't easy, but I keep telling myself that in the future when I am on maintenance, I can still have all of those things occasionally if I really want them, but NOW is not the time... then I chug a 16 ounce bottle of Water. WE CAN DO THIS!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
