For Distance Runners

I am glad that caffeine is not banned this year. What do you think about Cellucor C4? This stuff really helps with maintaining efficiency and form during a long run as a pre workout drink. I think it also helps with recovery.

I have never used it. My recovery has pretty much always been a Protein Shake or chocolate milk. Sometimes OJ ... I just kinda go with what my body is telling me. Really depends on my conditioning and distance that day.

Restricted list means that it is allowed but if its found in excess (I'm not sure exactly what that level is) you can be subjected to disqualification, assuming you are one of those subjected to peeing in a cup. :)

They haven't made me pee in a cup, yet! Although I would love to be at the level of competetion where they would make me.

I've read through these post in amazement! Y'all are rock stars! I haven't been sleeved yet and I dislike exercise but was just talking to my husband last night about the need for me to start and how I'd love to be one af those endorphin junky runners. He is a track coach and I'd like to be able to do the workouts he has his high school track girls do. I don't think I have it in me though. But y'all, are seriously awesome!!

Just do what you can. If begins with one step. Put some headphones on and listen to some music and make it about "me" time. Even if it just starts with walks.

For those of y'all running on treadmills....I hope the weather clears up enough soon so you can get outside and run some trails. I've gotten where I don't even like to run on the street anymore. Running trails is just too much fun. And I live in the Houston area, not exactly the outdoor trail running mecca, but still there are enough trails around with enough scenery to keep me happy. It's harder than running on the street, a little slower...but the miles fly by and the scenery just makes you forget you're exercising.

Someday, someday. I love running on my treadmill too much. I guess I need to develop an appreciation for running outside.

Did a 10.5 mile trail run this morning. It was supposed to be 8 miles but I took a wrong turn on the trail. Didn't matter though, I had a great time. I had a pocket fuel (chocolate haze) and I sat very well with me about half way through the run. Tastes like chocolate Peanut Butter. I only tripped over 2 roots and busted my ass....one slightly skinned knee later I was back in business. No worries though. I must say....I'm completely spent.

I've been following this topic since almost it's inception, and I thought it was time to join in officially. I'm Eric, known on here and on MyFitnessPal as DadTo2. I was sleeved on June 19, 2012 and had a starting weight of 371 and two months after surgery I started running one day on a walk and decided that I like doing that and wanted to do more of it. I started doing slow jogging for a while and in early August of '12 I started the C25K program. I ran my first 5K in the sixth week of the program and had a time of 34:27. Since then I have run 4 other 5K races with an official PR of 29:25. I will be running my 5th 5K race next Saturday.

Currently I am coming off a Grade II Calf Strain which sidelined me from running for the past 5 1/2 weeks, but it seems to be better now, and have run a few times this past week or so. I am going to ramp it up over the next few weeks to get back into training mode. I won't be trying to make up for lost time, but I will instead move my goal of running my first 1/2 Marathon back to September at the Plano Balloon Festival's 1/2 Marathon, in Plano, TX. In between that and now, I will be running two or three 10K races.

By the way, I love the idea of a VST running team. If you have a slot available, I'd like to be a part of that!

Hey BTB- how long does it usually take to run 10k? Do you tend to run at a more relaxed pace in order to run the long distance?

Hi ya! I know u asked BTB but i figured its been awhile since i chimed in on anything. :) I'm 5'3 and I'm not a fast ass. My fastest time is 58 and change. That was on a rolling course. If I'm on a training run, I always run slower. There's nothing like race excitement to give u that extra added edge. ;)

I've been checking in from time to time. U guys r amazing! I'm having some off and on health issues that have been throwing off my run schedule pretty significantly. :( I'm so glad to be able to read and participate in the posts. It keeps me eager to get back into the swing of things when I'm able.

Hey BTB- how long does it usually take to run 10k? Do you tend to run at a more relaxed pace in order to run the long distance?

On training runs, I'd say it's more like 1:20 for me to do 10K. I've only run that far maybe 7 times. My first ever race is next Saturday....it's a 10K. I'm eager to see if I'll be any faster than usual, but I'm not going to try to be fast....being its my first race. I personally have never been able to run fast and for some reason it just doesn't agree with me, so instead I'm embracing the long distance runs. I am getting faster though, not quickly but I notice it's happening. Trail running is even slower than road running....but so much more gratifying. I've yet to run on a treadmill so I don't know how fast I'd be on one of those.

But I'm sure I would need to run a little slower on a 10K than a 5K.

Here's a website that will give you a target for other distances. You plug in your 5K time and it gives you an idea how fast you should run 10K, half marathon, full marathon and so forth. It accounts for the fact that you'll have to slow down some on those longer distances.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
