Real Talk, Real Food...

So I'm making pancakes and bacon for my boys and sipping chicken broth. My boys ate all of their food and decided they wanted to try my broth, so when we return from church I have to make them Soup. My boys are the best support. They are the main reason I'm doing this.

Hi Elektrik! I wanted to reach how and say hi and let you know you are not alone! I love to hear you say you are doing this for your boys....I am certainly doing this for my 5 yr old daughter. I want to be such a good roll model and not just tell her to eat good and then turn around and be a pig. I also don't want her to battle these issues like have.

I am 5 days out and really doing great. I am trying my best to get my Protein in....but it seems to hurt and make my stomach bloat. How are you doing with that? How far out are you? I will have to cook tonight for the first time....so I will see if I have trouble with temptation. I know it is probably habit (bad habit) to just nibble while I cook....I will have to watch that!!!!

I would live to keep up with you and have a buddy!

Good luck! We will ROCK THIS!!!!!!

Hi want2live!!!

My name is Ashley. I haven't had surgery yet. I'm there on Wednesday and nervous as heck! I'd like to be buddies. I'm new to this site, so this is very exciting. I nibble as I cook too. In fact nibbled as I cooked all week, but not like I used too. At church this morning, several people walked up to me and told me how much weight I've lost. i was shocked. I haven't weighed since last week. You'll be fine when you cook for the first time. My Mom is coming over on Wednesday and leaving on Friday, so she'll be cooking for my boys. My boyfriend, who lives at home but him and Mom don't get along, will be back home on Saturday and cooking for the boys. He's a skinny guy, but a kitchen supervisor at an amazing restaurant in our area. I'll have to watch out for foods he brings home from work after liquid diet. He brought me Soup the other day and I took one teaspoon and felt like I could taste the butter, so I split it into two meals and cut it with a lighter soup. I'm doing a steained creamed soup once a day and only 8oz. How are you feeling? I've noticed I'm very sleepy and haven't even had surgery yet...LOL!!!

Hi Ashley! My name is Tyler. I know it is a traditional boys name....but I am a girl just named after my grandfather.

I am so excited for you for this week. I was just sleeved this past Tuesday so we will only be about a week apart.

You will do just great! I was certainly worried and stressed.....but I just can't believe how well everything is going a week out.

I am happy for you that you have so much support. My parents were in and out if the hospital....but mostly at home with my daughter. My boyfriend of 3 yrs stayed with me at the hospital....even slept in the chair the 2 nights. It really does make so much difference!!!

So....you are in your pre-op diet? Sounds like you are doing just fine.

Please ask anything you want or need. I have a colleague that had this done 7 months ago and I know how helpful it has been for me to have her to ask so many crazy things!

Maybe we can exchange email if you feel comfortable with that.

Hope you are having a good Sunday with your family!

Sure. I'll send my email in a message. My eldest son's name is Joshua-Tyler. I always said I'd name my child Tyler. My name was supposed to be Joshua if I was a boy. We didn't know we were going to have another child...LOL!

My hospital stay is only overnight. My boyfriend is supposed to stay the night with me. I had a friend that did it last year. She was 384lbs and now just under 200lbs. She looks amazing.

Hi Ashley,

Not on a liquid diet but did the same thing had surgery June 15th. I had to cook for my husband and kids before and after the surgery. It wasn't as bad as I expected. Of course I didn't make any of my favorites. I pretty much did meatloaf, chicken, fish, pasta's with salad and a carb. Most were my normal weak night meals. I had one night stay in the hospital and no gas pains so I was very fortunate. Don't forget it's ok to make sandwiches some nights. My kids kept eating my Jello and yogurts. :-) You will do fine. I just want to wish you a speedy recovery.

Hi Almostthere34!

Yeah, I have a secret cabinet my boyfriend just found out about. It has my Jello, pudding, broth and sugar-free sweeteners in it. He's very skinny, but he's lazy at home, so instead of cooking for himself, I find him going through my cabinet for Snacks. Sad!!!! I've been using my foreman for a lot of the kid's meals. I was required to do the liquid diet a week before surgery. I did it for two just to challenge myself and see how much more I could lose. The night before the week started, I treated myself to a salad with 5 jerk shrimp.

Hi

I am 5 months out! Congrats on making the best decision EVER! I love it! I was 292 day of surgery, 216 this morning. You can check my profile for some pics....

I thought cooking Hubby's favorite meals would be hard - but it's not! I even went to a chinese buffet for lunch today - and just ate some shrimp and crab. Now - I DID eyeball the lo mein...and missed it for a second - but nothing could replace how I feel about myself now!!

You go girl!

I had a week liquid too. Kudos to you for doing two weeks. I could barely make it through one week. I cheated up until three days before, still lost 10 lbs. I kept my cheats to Protein only. My liver was so small I only needed three incisions.

@Almostther34 they said my liver was great during surgery and he could really tell I put forth an effort to do my liquid diet. This post op is hard. I can't eat anything. I know it will get better, but gas is so bad it makes me nauseas and I don't want to vomit.

@almostthere34 You are absolutely correct. I am getting better everyday. I don't have as much gas anymore. I have lots of energy. I just can't wait to be off liquids. I'm over Soup and I now hate Protein. I used to love the Protein Drinks and now they make me nauseous. I just found something at GNC called Protein Shots. I'll be using those until I'm off liquids.

I hated the smell of the powdered protein and could only tolerate the ready made Premier Protein from SAMs. I am glad you.re feeling better. Still not a soup fan some six month later. Be careful of the shots as many are made of collagen protein. We are supposed to do mostly whey Proteins. btw I still dislike broth from those days.

My NUT told me that I would miss fresh fruits and veg the most...so I ate a Greek salad with shrimp just before starting liquid diet. I guess the good news is that shrimp is tolerable as a first food when you get out of the soft food phase.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
