Post-Op Diet Confusion

Recommended Posts

There seems to be so many different variations of pre & post-op diets out there that I am getting as little confused. I am now a week out of surgery. I only stayed in the hospital overnight. The instructions I was sent home with said clear liquids until yesterday. As of yesterday my sheet just says 3 Protein Shakes a day plus 64 oz of Water. I am getting nowhere near that. Yesterday I got in one shake & 48 oz water. My stomach just couldn't handle anymore. I don't have any guidelines as to how much Protein that I should be getting in a day. My post-op appointment isn't until Thursday which is 10 days after my surgery. Maybe they will tell me more then? I see people the same amount of time out of surgery as me on pureed foods. I just want to make sure that I am on the right track. Does the plan I was given sound about right?

I just want to make sure that I am on the right track. Does the plan I was given sound about right?

Week 1 was liquid and shakes only

Week 2 thicker liquids eg, creamy Soups, custard, yoghurt etc

Week 3 soft food and puréed eg puréed chicken or meat, prawns etc with a little sauce or mayo. eggs can be eaten without being puréed.

Week 4 still soft foods meats etc but moist meat can be eaten whole and chewed really well without being puréed. You can also start eating things that dissolve easily like cracker bread or Melba toast.

3 months you can basically eat anything.

This is my post op diet hope this helps Ps. You should aim for between 2-4oz of meat a day and 60grams protein a day. Between 1litre and 2.5litres of Fluid (protein shakes can be included in liquid quantity consumed)

I was at two weeks out before I could do pureed food, then it was 6 weeks after than before I could do soft foods and another 6 weeks before I could start regular food. Just follow your Doctor's plan, after all there was a reason why you chose him.

Wow it's sad to me they haven't prepared you for your post op journey. And only overnight in the hospital- that's not very long and hardly long enough for them to even tell if u are tolerating stuff. Anyhow I had 6 mo of preparation for this surgery so I felt good. But even then it's really HARD to get the fluids in. My nutritionist told me Protein needs are based on height so for me who's 5'5" it's 75 gr a day but u Cannot start out eating that much cause too much protein without enough Water will dehydrate you. So my doc and nut said week 1 you have 1 serving a day(15g) and week 2 is 2 serv a day and so on until my 75g a day. Also it was full liquids first 2 weeks, then blended/soft for 2 wks then regular food. I started mashed potatoes a little early thinned out and did well. But to expect u to get in 64oz and the shakes is gonna be almost impossible. My liquid req is 64 oz including the shakes. Hope that helps- good luck!!!!

This was very helpful. Thank you. I see the nutritionist finally this Friday. I am going to make sure that things are very clear before I leave the office.

I'm only 3 days post-op and I think they don't teach you enough of what it's really going to be like. They told me I couldn't get to my Protein goal but not to what extent. I don't think I can get to half. :(

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
