Exercising (Cardio) After Surgery...

Wow...I'm 9 days post, and am walking about 10 houses down and back, about 3 times a day. That's about all I can do, before my left hip and back start bothering me. It's a start though, right?

10 houses, 3 times per day?? I think that's great! The important thing is you are moving. :)

I know we should start walking & cardio as soon as we can but what about squats and/or lunges? Just asking since its not really cardio and I would to try and do them as soon as I physically could. I am preop btw..surg on 12/19.

I'm 3 days post-op and went to the gym this morning. Did 36 mins on the tredmill at 2.0 mph and 1-2 incline, not my personal best, but it's a start. I also did one rep of chest, shoulders, and back on the machines. My doctor cleared me for the gym with light weight training the day I was discharged. His motto is "if it hurts then stop". He's a huge advocate to exercise as a major component to successful weight loss with the sleeve.

I'm still energy deprived, but I also l know you have to expend energy to gain energy.

Thats good! I wonder how I will feel 3 days post op. I'll be staying with my mom a few states away from my home, so I won't be anywhere near my gym. While I'm staying with her about a week after surgery, I will walk her neighborhood. I should be home around day 6 and would like to walk the treatmill regularly. Hopefully, I;ll be just like you on my day 3... :)

I'm just a few days before you, so I'll post and let you know how things went...lol.. I would think squats and lunges wouldn't be comfortable on the abs for us for a while.

ugh I figured...just wanted to get a jump on the leg/thigh toning asap lol

By 3 weeks out I was walking 2 miles, 3 days a week. I'm 2 months post op and I run a lift heavy weights. My advice is do what you can and listen to your body.

I am impressed and jealous of your recovery. I felt like crap for about 3 weeks post-op and only could do walking per doctor. Doctor cleared me for cardio after 6 weeks and weights after 8 weeks. You want to be sure to give yourself time to heal and get strong. My doctor is a big advocate of exercise also, but only in terms of walking in order to heal without complications. I really paced myself at the gym. I know for me personally the more I avoid the gym the harder it will be for me to start back up. After working out I came home and took a 2 hour nap to recuperate.

Our bodies are powerhouses, and want to work at its optimal state. However, if we deprive it, it will deprive us. I'm a nurse and I've seen people in the hospital get very weak because they will not get up and move. I'm always trying to encourage them to move around as much as possible. So that being said, I have to follow my own advice.

We have to now retrain our bodies and mindset to realize this is our new "normal", and for me, there's no time to be wasted.

One of my mottos: Energy out = Energy in.

Congrats! You will do great.

Not everyone is full force like me. Pace yourself and always follow your doctors orders. My doctor just happens to be of the mindset that exercise will not disrupt anything, but no heavy weights until I see him 2 weeks post-op.

Our bodies are in a constant state of recovery and needs energy from what we eat and from how we exercise (train). Of course our energy level is decreased due to the decrease calories intake, but this is our new "norm" and our bodies will get use to the decrease calorie intake, this is how the sleeve works for us, calorie deficit. Energy expended = energy gained, that's why I am back in the gym post-op day 3!

I started some cardio two weeks out and strength training three weeks out..... Go by your doc but mine wanted me back at it as soon as I no longer needed pain med

Before my surgery I was into Zumba 24/7. My Doctor told me to walk everyday... But wait 4 weeks to start doing everything else... So at my 4weeks I try the treadmill for 30min. As the days past you will feel better and will add more things to your exercise routing...

My DOS is Dec 17! :-) I start my liquid diet on the 10th. The day of my office christmas party.. Oh the torture.. :unsure:

I know what you mean...It was really hard, I was able to do it(95% of the time) This was the best decision I've ever made.

My doctor is exactly the same. I was on the elliptical 3 days after surgery. I did very light weights not long after. When I saw him at 2 weeks he told me that as long as I listen to my body I could do any type of exercise.

Well I'm on day 3 and today I did a mile on the treadmill at 1.5 baby steps but I did it. No pain I actually felt like I could have up'ed the speed but didn't want to push my limits. Tomorrow I will do a mile and half at 2.0 speed. So all in all it depends YOUR body

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
