Cosmetic Questions For Post Weight Loss Phase

Recommended Posts

My weight loss is coming to an end. I have lost 150 lb from my highest weight per-surgery and I have been told by a couple people around me I could lose about 20 more lb. that works out to be about right and places my weight at 190. I might go to 180, but am not sure yet and will need to see how I look at 190. I already feel like a million bucks. I want to thank everyone on the forum for supporting me and answering my questions since my surgery date (7-2).

Now that I am close to transitioning into weight maintenance, I have a few questions. Most of them are cosmetic in nature.

1. I have a little hanging fat under my chin. I would not say I have a double chin, but it is not quite firm. Will this disappear in my last bit of weight loss? Will exercise take care of it? I do exercise almost every day in term of cardio and some weight lifting. How would one lift weights to tighten the area under the chin? Mouth stretches? Lol. Have others considered doing this.

2. I wear glasses for a relatively mild prescription ( probably from decades of computer work, who knows...) my wife has mentions that I might look better without glasses. All I know are wearing glasses most of my life and don't know anything else. I don't really want to mess around with contacts. Should I consider LASIK surgery? I haven't really looked into it, but think that to having to find my glasses when they fall off my night time stand might be helpful. I do have attractive eyes as others have told me ( don't worry, I am not a very vain person and this is what others have told me). Have others considered doing this?

3. I have always had extra chest and back hair. Should I get this waxed off, shaved off or removed in some other way? Might be helpful if I go into body building or something like that in the future. Lol. Do other guys consider doing this?

4. I have tried to exercise and weight lift during the weight loss phase. For whatever reason, I still have some lose skin around the middle. It is not terrible and I could live with it, it it would certainly look better if it were tight whenever i am shirtless such as swimming at a public pool or at a beach ( going to Mexico end of dec 2012 and Hawaii next may 2013). Should I get cosmetic surgery for this? Do other guys consider doing this?

Thanks for your responses. You guys are awesome. I am looking forward to posting before and after pictures next month (6 month post op). I am also looking forward to buying new stylish skinny clothes from real stores and not hand me down clothes from value village and goodwill.

I think that if lasik will make you happy go for it. But I have her told it only lasts for 10 years. As for as the skin. ... I say leave it. I don't understand why people who get the surgery act like they are abbot to launch a modeling career. You know were as big as 2 or more people and now ur in a healthy beautiful body be happy and stop obsessing. Congrats on ur weight loss!

I'm not a guy, but I can answer your lasik question. I had Lasik 12 years ago and it was one of the best things I ever did for myself. It's great to go swimming and see where you're going, look at the clock in the night to see what time it is, and just do day to day things. I had them checked last August and I'm still 20/20. Plus if your wife likes it, I say go for it

PS My ex had a hairy back and he waxed it, especially in the summer. I liked it! But that's a wifey thing too. She might not mind the hair.

Good point about obsessing. I don't think that applies to me, but I would like to put my best self forward. Hey, why not? It just goes to show I like myself ( in a healthy way) a lot more than I have in the past. I don't think there is any shame in that :)

Thanks for the response. I posed the same question also to my wife after making this post and she said wax the back , but keep the chest hair. Lol. Go figure. And it goes to show everyone has a different opinion about it. Even though I am reaching out for some answers from online friends, my wife has the final say in the matter. :)

I agree w your wife. Wax the back for sure! Leave the sexy hairy front alone. Lasik surgery wld be great, but also there are so many stylish frames these days. As for plastic surgery? Go on your trips. If you find that the extra skin bothers you, then consider the surgery. You need to wait at least a year after you are done losing anyway b4 plastics bcs your skin will still tighten.

Your under chin may be genetic. If it bugs you, get it sucked out in a year. Be the best that you can be and be proud!!

Go for any and all of it if you and your wife are on the same page. There is nothing wrong with improving how you feel about yourself. BTW it is nonsense to wait on the plastic surgery, you are getting the skin removed, no need to wait for it to shrink. Go ahead and enjoy!!

Yes,l will definitely get a doctor's opinion. For me, the extra skin is not very much, probably about 1/2 inch if that. I am sure insurance would not cover it. Maybe it will fix it self over the next year as i tone more and the akin tightens on its own. I think i got off pretty well after dropping so much weight in short period. Hope the same happens for others.

My plan is to go with the cosmetic surgery. It is not that I plan on a career in modeling, I just want a chance to feel great in my new body - healthy AND happy! My consult with the surgeon will be Friday, I am 6.5 months post surgery. So, I think if you want it - go for it! You have worked hard and deserve to feel your best.

LASIK - absolutely. Not a question in my mind.

Your wife answered for herself on the back hair, I think you should listen to her. And chest hair is manly, maybe that's why she likes it.

I have heard conflicting stories on the surgery timing. My surgeon asks that you are at goal for several months, and that it is more than six months past your surgery. I figure I will see the surgeon now as I am just getting to goal and then schedule for a few months from now.

***i just saw your above post that says it is only 1/2 inch of skin - I would wait a year or even two from now to consider surgery for such a small amount I skin. Seems likely to shrink.

I would also wait just a little bit. I had lap band in 2008 and lost (cos I couldn't eat) and had a Tummy Tuck and arm tuck in 2009. I had my band loosened for the surgery and I gained. Never got it back right. Honestly never liked the band. So here I am with the sleeve and stretched out scars :(

I had LASIK done 8 years ago and it was the very best money spent ever!

I had lasik in 2005, and I have 20/20 and 20/15 vision as of last month. I started with 20/220 and 20/200. I couldn't be happier to see my alarm clock in the middle of the night (as someone mentioned)! I also love men in the stylish, dark plastic frames.

If you hair is dark enough, consider laser hair removal. You can find great deals on Groupon for packages. Make sure the clinic using a YAG (darker skin) or Alexandrite (lighter skin) laser. I agree with getting rid of the back hair, but if your chest hair bothers you, maybe you and your wife can compromise by thinning it out. I love my SO's chest hair, but he doesn't. He had 4 laser treatments and has a quarter of the hair he used to have.

I would wait on the skin (neck and tummy). Lose the last bit of weight you want to get off, bump up your exercise, stay hydrated, use lotion, dry brush your skin and see what happens after you have maintained a steady wait for 6-12 months.

CONGRATS!!!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
