How Long To Take Eating?

Recommended Posts

Curious to know how long others are taking to eat. I am really struggling with this currently. I am almost two months out, which isn;t long at all but am having trouble. My NUT says each meal should take 30-45 minutes. I find when I am eating something like scrambled eggs, oatmeal, etc I am not taking nearly that long. Occasionally I will eat too fast and then feel it in my esophagus. Is anyone else out there struggling with this?

I too find it very hard to take more than 10 minutes to eat so little no matter how hard i try and no matter how good i chew. I also get that same feeling in my throat. I dont see how I can stretch the time out when i am eating so little. I am a month out.

I will be 2 months tomorrow. What I do when I eat is I take a bite and I will push my plate away and/or push myself away from the table. I will chew and chewwwww..... I try to wait a few minutes between bites. Now, with that being said, if I eat some oatmeal or an egg, there is no way it will take me 30 minutes.

I am getting better about not overeating. I haven't thrown up in over 3 weeks!!

Veg- how do you over eat? Because you eat too fast? I have a real hard time rating slow and more often than not feel it in my esophagus - but why do we need to eat do slowly?

Hi friends,

Just a couple tips 1) set an egg timer, 2) use chop sticks (my favorite) and 3) make yourself get a little distracted while eating.

These things helped me.....

4) Take very small bites

5) set your utensil down after taking a bite, & don't pick it up again till after swallowing.

6) Try to wait 2minutes between bites.

7) Try using smaller utensils. Many have even used baby utensils.

Chopsticks- what a perfect idea! I'm going to try this, even though I'm not having issues-thank goodness!

If we eat 3 meals and two Snacks a day, and there really isn't much difference between the size of the meal or snack, and we are supposed to spend 30-45 minutes eating each, then that would be up to 4 hours a day just eating.

Not practical.

No way it ever takes me 30 mins to eat, I've never thrown up from eating too fast or eaten too much. I make sure I only dish up about 1/2 to 3/4 a cup of food and I take the same time to eat that amount as others who are eating a normal amount of food around me.

Have felt bloated and had to lie down a few times

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
