I searched this topic and nothing came up, so i thought i can make a thread and maybe someone can answer my question.

I was married five month ago, and when i had the surgery it didn't occur to me to ask about pregnancy until after i was sleeved. My question might have came too late. I asked my doctor if i can get pregnant and he said am not allowed at least until the first year. WHY NOT? I dont mind waiting a year before i get pregnant but what happens if i accidentally get pregnant? will i lose the baby?

My husband and i dont mind waiting and are doing our best and have all the precautions to not get pregnant. BUT i am sure that everyone have heard about becoming pregnant while on pills or other forms of prevention! This fact scares me. I am too young to be a mom, i can wait. but am worried i cant avoid gods will, accidents happen... if i got pregnant do i have to consider abortion?

You will probably be just fine to carry the baby. The reason they want you to wait is so you can lose most your weight before considering pregnancy. It is much harder to lose weight after pregnancy. It will be harder to nourish the baby in the first year too but you will not need to get an abortion, It is very common for sleeveers to get pregnant suddenly shortly after surgery! Try to get to your goal weight THEN get pregnant and get the most out of your sleeve!

Pregnancy is also hard on your body and I think most doctors want you to completely recover from this drastic change before getting pregnant. The reccomend waiting 12-18 months to give you as much time to get to goal as possible.

Remind yourself that its much easier to get pregnant without the extra weight. Site plus is when you do start trying it will be that much easier

I do know someone who got pregnant 5 months after surgery. It was an oops baby but she carried to term and the baby was healthy. She continued to watch her diet while pregnant.

The reason they want you to wait is because think about it - how much nutrition are you getting right now? The body just isn't getting enough in to support a baby. The reason they tell you to wait is for both your health and the child's health. Accidents do happen, and if it does, the first thing you'd need to do is to get in touch with your surgeon and find out what to do, because it's going to be difficult to get enough nutrition in. I've never read in any literature that the pregnancy would need to be terminated, but it would require a high level of medical attention, that's for sure.

What Gamer said. ^

And avoiding pregnancy has very little to do with "losing weight first." For the first 12-24 months after surgery if you conceive there is a high risk for neural tube defects.

Be safe. Double up on birth control, one method isn't enough.

heh heh what liz said as well. You can nourish your body enough to lose weight during the first year, but you will be highly challenged to be able to nourish a baby as well. It can be done, but from the beginning you will be a high risk pregnancy with significant monitoring necessary to ensure that your baby will arrive without defects associated with a low calorie/low nutritive value diet.

I have a baby who was born early, no fault of my own (eclampsia) and while I love him with all of my heart, he was a two million dollar baby and he still has an illness associated with his premature birth. You'd never know he has any problems...he looks normal :) But he's still sick and his sickness is a major part of our life we can never escape. This is no way to start a new life with your baby or your husband if you can avoid it. :) So double up (accidents really don't happen darling....or it's pretty darned rare now a days given the advantages of birth control available to us). When you are ready for a baby I wish you the greatest success in producing a beautiful bundle of joy :) But skip it now! Hopefully you'll never know why someone with a sick kid would say that :)

Oh thank you darling. He's a beautiful little boy and unlike many with his syndrome (he has the "boy in the bubble" disorder in his blood) he will actually grow out of his illnesses. Every year he gets stronger and despite it sounding like he's suffering a lot, he takes it all with a grain of salt as he's never known a different life. He's a very happy and blessed child. When he's ten or so this will hopefully all be a distant memory for all of us! There is light at the end of the tunnel, but I also never want to see any new mom or dad saddled with this type of issue when it can be avoided. :) You're a beautiful couple and you deserve a beautiful and healthy baby in your future!!!!

Didn't mean to scare you, doll. But I had this surgery so I could have children someday. So I did extensive research in pregnancy post sleeve. I also work with special needs children/adults. While they're all amazing and I love them all, I see how taxed the parents are at times, with good reason. It's worth the doubled birth control and year or so wait. Trust me.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
