Newly Post Op Diet Progression

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I'm 5 days post-op with my band. I see my surgeon, presumably my first fill in 8 more days, but I don't see the Nutritionist for 2 more weeks. Do you think I'm supposed to start with pureed or soft foods after the first week, or do you think they expect you to stay on liquids for the whole 3 weeks post-op before I see the Nutritionist? Getting tired of shakes!

:clap2: Like you I am a recent bandster. I was operated on 20/09./06 and for the first two weeks I was told to only have fluids or Soups that I could drink through a straw. I actually had them slightly thicker than that but I blended everthing and only had the consistency that it would easily drip off a spoon!

Between two and four weeks I have been told that i can eat soft foods like shepherds pie, fish pie, porridge, omlettes, scrambled eggs etc. Any foods that can be mashed down with a fork are ok to eat.

I am seeing my dietician in two weeks time which will be four weeks after the op. Hopefully I may get a fill 2 weeks later which will be six weeks after the op.

I do hope everything is going well with you.Do not rush into eating too much as your stomach needs lots of time to recover. Also if you start eating solids too quickly I was told it was more likely that your band might slip later on. Don't know if this is true or not.

Good luck with it all and think of where you will be in a year's time!

HI heyyoubigguy and all,

I'm 1 week out today.

I've been having Jello and yogurt from day 1 along with the broths.

Last night I made chili for my family and was fine for awile and then my stomach actually was rumbling LOUD. I haven't heard that since 2 weeks before surgery when I first went on liquids. The smell of chili was almost too much for me. :faint: So I blended some up to see what it would look like and if it'd be thin enough to drink. It wasn't. So I called my nutritionist and told her how I was feeling. She immediately told me to progress on to my 3-4 week diet plan of soft foods. YEAH!!!!! :clap2: She said if I'm still getting in the right amounts of Protein, then it should be ok for me to have 3-4 ozs. ground beef, turkey, chicken and soft scrambled eggs, etc. I won't need to blend it either.

Funny thing though.....now that she's told me too, I'm afraid of eating. Crazy huh!? :paranoid I did taste the chili I had blended but I'm too afraid of eating too much. I've only had my liquids today although I brought 4 oz. of my blended chili to work with me. You hear so much about overfilling the pouch and stretching it and slippage that I'm hesitant.

Anyone elase ever do this? Been given the freedom to eat and won't? Such an unusual behavior for me!:)

Lynn

Hey Iwatts, thanks for the info. You've inspired me to call my nutrionist tomorrow. Maybe I can get "permission" to progress. I'm glad it's going well for you. I can see your hesitancy to eat regular again. It's pyscologically been a taboo, and now your allowed to partake in such

licentious behavior!! You must've been Catholic or Lutheran to grow up with such ingrained guilt!

Anyone...Do you know if when the band is put in , if they put any type of fill in it during the procedure. Or is it totally empty. Wondering what effect each will have on eating soft or pureed/mushy foods at first. Thanks, Al

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
