Just A Week Out And Starting To Get Really Down

Recommended Posts

I'm just 5 days out since I had surgery, but I'm starting to really feel depressed.

I'm still on Clear liquids only, but with that I'm aloud to eat sugar free Jello. I tried eating the Jello today for the first time, and after 2 spoons of it, I immediately threw up. I've also had a 4 day stomache from trying to jam myself full of liquids. Please tell me this isn't how it's going to be...

One of my biggest passions in life is cooking and sitting around a table with my friends and family and eatting and talking. It's just what we do down here in the south. If I can't handle 2 spoonfuls of jello, how am I going to be able to eat again?

I feel like I've given up what I love just so I can wear a pair of smaller jeans...

Please tell me this gets easier and I'll be able to eat again.

I'm six weeks out and I have times during some days that I feel down. Today when I was in the grocery store, I walked by the Halloween candy and started feeling sorry for myself and wondered if any of this was worth it. Sometimes I question my decision or my ability to succeed. As I anticipate the holiday season, I also think about time with family and celebrations that include food.

If any of this was easy, we all could have done it a long time ago without medical intervention. We don't just face physical aspects of being overweight, we also have emotional aspects as well. It is easier to define the physical parts of being overweight, but the emotional part can be complex and may be very different for each of us.

Having support systems in place are a valuable resource that should be accessed at times like these. That depends on who you want to lean on: friends, family, coworkers, a local support group, this forum, etc. Just keep communicating and be patient with yourself through this time of personal growth.

Believe me it's gets easier every single day. You are going through a normal part of the process. It takes a couple months or so for you to be able to eat more. I'm still amazed at how little fills me up and I'm 3 1/2 months post op. you will go through lots of different stages. I go from mourning the old way of eating to being ecstatic that I can now eat normal! I'm down 59lbs and believe me it is SOOOOO worth it!!!

I can honestly tell you it gets much better than the period you're in. I started to wonder what my life was going to be like too in that period. No throwing up, but definitely nauseous and sick of liquids. But I have to tell you honestly, the times of sitting around and eating and talking with my friends is much different now. I sometimes watched enviously as they eat, and eat, and eat but I'm full after a couple of bites. I've even overeaten just to fit in. But I'm learning to take my bite or two and then visit and talk. It's an adjustment but one that best fits my priorities which are to be skinny and healthy. I'd much rather have all the benefits of my weight loss. It'll never be like it used to be for you but that may be ok. Give it a few months before you decide.

Hang in there Kelly! I know liquids are not easy. I'm 12 days out and clearly remember the mental torment. How about TV? I had no clue there were so many food commercials on TV!

Once you get back to work and start a routine things tend to get better. I'm drinking 2 Protein shakes a day during work and coming home to blend up some Soup. I also made some homemade Soup from the "Eating Well After Weightloss Surgery" book and used it for 4 days after (froze it in these little 3 oz containers). After you start tasting real food again things get a little easier.

I also think you win a battle with your mind at some point. It seems that my mind has finally come to accept that I'm making a change. I'm looking forward to the journey!

Also, Jello and I do not get along now for some reason. I got a bunch of it before surgery and haven't touched it. Also got some stage 1 babyfood. I'll take a sip of the fruit every once in awhile just to taste something other then Protein shake & Water.

Hey, I had the same feelings for just a minute. But yes, it is going to be alright. I love to cook also so last night for several hours, I looked up all the exciting recipes that fellow members posted. They look great. So hang in there.

Like everyone is saying, it does get better. Please remember that you just had major surgery on your stomach and it's still sore and probably pretty swollen/inflamed. As you heal, you'll be able to eat a bit more. Good luck to you...you're going to love your new life!

I also had the same feelings. I remember coming home and crying, wondering what in the world I had done to myself! The first two weeks were the hardest for me. You will make it. I had people on here tell me that, too, and I really wondered if I would. sugar free Jello made me sick. I didn't throw up, but it didn't stay in me long at all. Sometimes I wonder if its the sugar substitutes. Hang in there. I'm 3 months out and have lost 51 pounds. You'll make it!!! :)

It does get better! I am almost three months out and I still have lots of moments of regret. However when I went to the store to try on clothes, I was ecstatic. I went from a size 24 to a 16 in just two and a half months! I won't fib and tell you it is a breeze because it is not. This surgery takes lots of work and dedication. I got severely depressed after my surgery but it is getting better! I wish you the best!

I am right there with you, girl. They told me I could try soft foods today. I tried a piece of string cheese and it felt like it got stuck. I got sick and it was painful. I guess I ate it too fast because I just wanted to feel "normal"for a minute. We are in the work part of our journey not the results part.

I think orbit hard period with not being able to have the stuff that we want. But believe me it is worth it. I am 5 weeks out and I feel so good. This holiday season is goin to be hard but just drink the Water and bring stuff with you that you can eat. I get down sometimes to but then I think that it will be worth it and it is teaching me for later on that I don't have to eat everything and have self control over food. It is a lifestyle change and I don't want to go back to being fat.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
