5 Days Till Surgery And Have A Cold Now...

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for 10/23, five days away! I have a cold now for the last three days; runny/stuffy nose, nasal drip and mild cough & wheezing (I do not have asthma), NO fever/chills. I was wondering if my surgey would be postponned. I spoke to docotor's office today and explained yet they don't seem to be too concerned. I am hoping to be better by then. My first date of 10/1 was postponned (5 days before) due to low Iron, now I am scared my 10/23 date will be postponned. But I guess better to be on the side of caution. Any thoughts???

Are you having any trouble breathing or are you breathing normally?

No trouble breathing. The first two days it was just a runny/stuffy nose and then last night a bit of wheezing/cough and same today and also that constant clearing if my throat from nasal drip, but my nose lightened up a little today.

I guess if your surgeon isn't concerned you probably should be. I suggest that you make sure you get up and moving the day of surgery so you lower your risk for pneumonia.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I came down with a cold the day after I had my EGD and it turned into a sinus infection. I was coughing up nasty junk!

The PA at my surgeon's office gave me a 'scrip for a z-pack which cleared it up. She also suggested I take AirBorne, which is loaded with zinc. You might call your surgeon's office and see if you can take a zinc-based OTC med. If you take it during the first few days of cold symptoms, you're likely to feel better faster. But check with your surgeon first before you take anything!

How did it go? I'm in the same boat. 6 days out from surgery and woke up with the first signs of a cold. I'm freaking out.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
