Scheduling Surgery - How Long Were You Out Of Work?

Recommended Posts

First topic post, yay! ;)

How long were you in the hospital, and how long were you out of work?

I'm done w/ all my pre-surgery appointments and ready to schedule surgery. I'm a teacher, and our holiday break seems like my best option, since it will give me a full 2 weeks to have the surgery and heal. But...our last day of school is 12/22, which means the first day for surgery would be 12/24. Not sure they would do that, and if they even did, I don't want to be away from my family for Xmas. So now I'm thinking of bumping it back a week and taking a few days before the break for the surgery, and then using the break for healing. But then I think, "well, maybe I won't need a full 2 weeks off, and if that's the case, I could do it over T-day weekend." I'm young-ish (40 in a few months) but heal fast.

I'd love it if you could share your experience with me, to help me decide the timing. Thanks!

I'm 43 and had my VSG on 9/25. I was out the day before, and go back tomorrow - so I will have been out for 3 weeks. I probably could have gone back last week - I felt really good. I am actually approved out through 10/23 but I'm going stir crazy at home.

Good luck!

I was sleeved 9/24/12. I felt well enough to return in my 2nd week post op, however I have chosen to stay out 8weeks.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
