Pre Op Diet And Physical Labour

Recommended Posts

As of today I am officially booked for surgery with Dr.Lopez in TJ in December! I do physical labour at a coal mine and work 12 hour shifts(14 hour days with travel). I am concerned about the pre-op diet and my job as I will be working right up until the day before I leave for TJ. Has anyone else that works in labour positions had any trouble with energy, passing out, etc. as a result of labour work during the pre-op diet, especially the 3 liquid diet days?

My pre-op diet was mainly liquids due to a high (53.97) BMI. I did get light headed when I was stacking firewood for the winter. I asked the Dr about it & they said to not work so hard during this phase. I am sure if I was eating salad & some Protein I would not have had this issue. Each Dr is a little differrent depending on the patient. Have you discussed this with them?

My liquids were clear Soups, Protein Shakes, crystal lite, coffee, (black) tea etc. I had no limits on how much or how many I could consume on this phase.

Those liquids above were for the 2 weeks, for the 3 days it was all clears, tea, coffee, chicken or beef broth, crystal lite & Water. It was hard but I just ket telling myself, its only for 3 days & keep your eyes on the prize !!

)Sorry for the late reply! I've decided not to work the 3 night shifts prior to my surgery. My body already doesn't handle the labour work very well on nights, and if you got light headed stacking wood, I can only imagine I'd be near the same at work! Plus I work alone and no one would know if I passed out lol! I've been told to do the liquid diet 7-14 days prior to surgery, with just the last 3 days being the clear liquid diet. My surgery is not until dec 13 2012, but it is creeping up quickly! Just want to be sure I know what to expect :) thanks for your help Cinders!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
