no its not painful they will have u drink some crystle that will help blow up ur tummy and whatever else they need to get a picture of and then you will need to some barium which is pretty chalky tasting and feels really heavy when they hand it to you. the tech. will tell you to take a few gulps and keep it down while they take pictures. its painless but nasty to drink and i have bad gag reflexes so its hard to keep the barium down. u will be fine ive had at least 2-3 done in the past 2-3 years.

It was nasty. It has the consistency of wet cement and glue. I had mine Wednesday and my diarrhea just stopped this morning. They said it would cause Constipation but not for me. And they told me I could go right back to work. I went back to work and felt so bad I had to go home. Not nauseous, just sick to my stomach. Good news is that I haven't been hungry and I lost 2 pounds. Good luck, it doesn't bother most people, I'm just some kind of special.

I didn't have to take or drink anything for my upper GI. I chose to have mine with anesthesia so I went to the hospital, they hooked up my IV, sprayed nasal spray that numbed my nasal passage and throat, then put me under. After that, they just put a scope down my throat and the doc looked at whatever he needed to. All in all, I was only out for about 30 minutes and woke up in recovery with no problems. I guess every doc does them a little different.

My upper GI is set for 10/15 @10am. They said I'd be put under conscious sedation (2 drugs but I can't remember which), no mention of barium. I took the whole day off work. It's the part of this journey that's freaking me out the most, next to the actual surgery. :) I'm not a big fan of "procedures" lol

that sounds like an endoscopy where they put the scope down your throat. I only had the barium swallow test. It's just an x-ray while you drink stuff so they can see how it goes down.

I don't think you can have an upper GI done while asleep because you need to stand upright and swallow the barium. But...i could be wrong! It does sound like two diff procedures, both of which I had pre-op.

The sedation is Versed. Pronounced ver said. You won't remember a thing. Only issue I had was it does burn a little going into the IV.

Good luck everyone!

That must be an endoscopy

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
